This position involves identifying samples from invasive insect surveys and contributing to vital entomology programs, while gaining hands-on experience in a laboratory environment.

Responsibilities
Supporting the identification of invasive insect survey samples for various entomology programs
Utilizing a microscope and taxonomic keys to accurately identify insects from a range of samples
Pinning and curating insect specimens for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's insect reference collection
Entering data from these samples into the necessary databases
Maintaining meticulous records that contribute to the overall integrity of the program
Assisting the entomology staff in managing survey equipment
Keeping a detailed laboratory log of activities to track progress and findings
Undertaking other entomology-related duties as needed
Qualification
Required
You must be in possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C driver's license or equivalent
You must be willing and able to work in Dauphin County, PA
You must be willing to work a temporary, full-time schedule without benefits
You must be available to work up to a 9-month position from approximately March 1 to September 29, 2026
You must be able to perform essential job functions
Preferred
Experience working in a laboratory
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Microscope
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Taxonomic keys
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Identifying insects
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Pin or curate insect specimens
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Enter data from samples
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Set up and monitor insect survey traps
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Maintain laboratory log
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Determine difference between target and non-target organisms
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Determine difference between common biota in samples and rare biota
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Proper preparation of insect specimens
