Assistant Attorney General – Employment, Tort, & Public Utilities Commission

NEOGOV is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Office of Attorney General Keith Ellison's Employment, Torts, and Public Utilities Division. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide legal counsel and representation to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, including engaging in appellate work and handling legal matters related to utility, energy, and telecom issues.

Responsibilities

Providing legal counsel and representation to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC)
Providing legal advice to the MPUC at its regularly scheduled agenda meetings regarding utility, energy, and telecom matters
Handling appeals arising out of the MPUC’s decisions
Briefing and arguing cases in front of Minnesota’s appellate courts
Defending claims against the MPUC in state and federal court
Managing an active caseload and meeting tight deadlines
Contributing positively to a team and interacting successfully with clients and members of the public

Required

Graduation from a law school accredited by the ABA and actively licensed in good standing to practice law in the State of Minnesota
An interest in handling utility, energy, and telecom cases on behalf of the MPUC
Outstanding writing, research, and oral communication/advocacy skills (writing sample of up to five pages is required with application submission)
Ability to travel to counties throughout the state
Ability to multitask by managing an active caseload and meeting tight deadlines
Ability to contribute positively to a team and interact successfully with clients and members of the public
Ability to work in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative work environment
To be considered at the S2 level, candidates must have at least 6 years of directly related experience
To be considered at the S3 level, candidates must have at least 12 years of directly related experience

Preferred

Appellate clerkship
At least three years of experience practicing law (a judicial clerkship can count as one year)
At least three years of experience in regulatory utility matters
Experience handling appellate work and appearing before appellate courts
A business, finance, economics, or accounting degree or relevant experience in regulatory or financial matters
