Responsibilities

Assist with monitoring and conservation research of marine mammal species within areas including Southeast Alaska, Gulf of Alaska, and Bering Sea
Design, plan and perform scientific research for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Gulf and Bering Marine Mammal Program

Required

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience
A valid driver's license is required
Ability to legally carry a firearm (no felony convictions)
Safe Wildlife Capture certification
Firearm/ammo safety
Water safety
First Aid/CPR training is required but can be obtained after selection
Experience leading field research teams
Experience developing and implementing research projects
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals
Experience presenting research results at scientific conferences
Experience writing reports and documents
Experience explaining research and management on controversial wildlife management topics and studies

Preferred

Research Experience - Experience as a wildlife biologist performing field work studies on marine mammals
Desired experience in ecology, population monitoring, and/or cetacean biology
Research Project Development and Management - Experience developing research projects, experimental design, obtaining competitive funding, and leading projects for species with conservation need
Desired experience includes identifying potential projects, defining project objectives, research planning and review, budget preparation and management, leadership of field teams, statistical analysis, data management, data archiving, and metadata
Regulatory Experience - Knowledge and experience with marine mammal regulations
Specifically describe work experience pertinent to marine mammal permits, the MMPA, and ESA listed species
Staff Management - Experience with supervision of field teams and other professional staff
