Equipment Operator I - Public Works - Entry Level Position

NEOGOV is seeking Equipment Operator I applicants within the Public Works department of the City of Wylie. The selected applicant will perform manual labor and related work as required, including maintaining tools and equipment, loading and unloading materials, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.

Responsibilities

Keeps work areas clean. Cleans, maintains, and services tools and equipment
Loads and unloads materials and equipment
Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions, plans, maps, and drawings
Submits written reports legibly and completely
Creates reports using the Public Works software system
Hears clearly when working around equipment and in traffic
Uses proper safety precautions when performing all tasks. Exercises good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Operates vehicles according to rules of safety and laws of the State of Texas. Uses proper safety precautions at all times and wears proper safety equipment at all times. Follows safety regulations, City and department policies and procedures
Presents a clean and well-groomed appearance
Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City
Able and willing to work outside in all kinds of weather
Communicates effectively with co-workers
Subject to after-hours call-out for emergency situations, as defined by supervisor
Sets up barricades when and where needed for the safety of employees and the public
Completes work orders, including turning in completed forms on a daily basis
Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City
Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all
Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others
Other duties as may be assigned
Participates in all phases of street, drainage and alley maintenance, repair and construction when assigned to Streets
Uses hand saw, skill saw, chain saw, drill press, bolt cutter, pick axe, air compressor, jackhammer, cutting torch, and various weight hammers when assigned to Streets
Works effectively with other crew members to repair or replace water or sewer service lines, water or sewer mains when assigned to Water or Wastewater
Makes water or wastewater taps when assigned to Water or Wastewater
Installs and/or repairs fire hydrants when assigned to Water or Wastewater
Unstops sewer lines when assigned to Water or Wastewater
Installs clean-outs in sewer lines when assigned to Water or Wastewater

Required

High School Diploma or equivalent
Valid Driver's License
Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire
Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Class “A” CDL with no restrictions except “A” within one year
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification within one year

Preferred

Possession of a Texas Certified Chemical Applicator's License preferred (issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture in lawn/ornamental and weed control)
Bucket truck certification preferred
NPDES Certified Stormwater Inspector preferred
Backhoe Certification preferred
Wastewater Collections Class I preferred
Confined Space Certification preferred
Class D Water Operator License preferred

Benefits

Retirement benefits with Texas Municipal Retirement System. Contributions by payroll deduction. Employee contributes at 7% level. City matches 200% of employee contribution. Mandatory.
Deferred compensation - Nationwide and Edward Jones. The City does not contribute. Employee contributions by pre and post-tax payroll deduction. Optional.
Health/Dental/Vision/Prescription insurance PPO and HDHP/HSA plans. PPO - Employee pays $30 per pay period for employee only coverage and 60% of dependent premiums, the City covers 40% of dependent premiums. HDHP/HSA - City pays full premium costs for employee only coverage and 50% of dependent premiums.
Flexible Spending Account - allows for pre-tax deduction for eligible medical expenses as well as dependent care expenses. Optional.
Health Savings Account with a High Deductible Health Plan - City contributes $1000 for employee only coverage and $200 for employee + one dependent or more coverage.
Life insurance - 2x annual salary through New York Life. Fully paid by City and 1x annual salary through TMRS. Total of 3x annual base salary.
Long-Term Disability for all full-time City employees.
Thirteen paid holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and one floating holiday.
Vacation - Earn three weeks of vacation in the first year.
Sick leave accrues each full pay period.
Sick leave conversion to vacation leave (once per year in January).
Sick leave buy back (if budget allows; once per year).
Bereavement leave, military leave, jury duty leave.
Longevity pay $8 per month of service; paid once per year.

Tuition reimbursement - $2,000 per year.
Direct Deposit - City of Wylie Payroll will deposit employee paycheck to any bank accepting wire transfers.
