Responsibilities

Perform skilled turf maintenance including mowing, weed-eating, edging, leaf mulching, aerating, fertilizing, and seeding
Operate and perform routine daily service and maintenance on a variety of mowers and equipment
Perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance, including chemical spraying, minor tree and shrub pruning, brush removal, and mulching
Perform word processing, record keeping, and report preparation on a computer
Effectively use basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones, and mobile radios
Operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal

Required

High school diploma, general education degree (GED) or one to three years related experience and/or training in turf or landscape maintenance
One to three years related experience and/or training in the operation of medium to heavy motorized equipment and the performance of heavy manual labor
Knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including Groundsmaster 580D, Ventrac, zero turn and walk-behind mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, blowers, pickups, dump trucks, box trucks, front-end loader, backhoe, bobcat and tractor
Ability to perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance, including chemical spraying, minor tree and shrub pruning, brush removal, mulching and other landscape maintenance duties
Ability to perform word processing, record keeping and report preparation on a computer and effectively use basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones and mobile radios
Ability to operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal
Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Learner's Permit prior to starting work
Ability to obtain a full CDL license within 6 months
Ability to obtain a Registered Technician Spraying License within 6 months
Ability to obtain a Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 12 months

Preferred

A Class B Commercial Driver License
Possessing a Registered Technician Spraying license
A Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification
A Fertilizer Applicator Certification

Benefits

Paid leave is time off from work available for use by an employee upon approval by supervisor.

Long Term Disability Insurance: Designed to provide a monthly benefit to assist employees with bills and maintaining a standard of living when disabled.
Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between participating in a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program.
Defined Benefit Pension Plan: Normal retirement after 55th birthday.
Hybrid Program: Provides the characteristics of the traditional pension plan with that of a deferred compensation plan.
Retirement Health Savings Plan: All employees contribute 1% of salary to a 401(h) health savings account.
Deferred Compensation: Employees may voluntarily contribute salary deferred dollars into a City Sponsored 457 Plan.
Flexible Spending Account: Allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars from their pay checks to pay for child care and/or medical and dental expenses.
Virginia College Savings Plan: Two plans to choose from at a reduced application fee.
