Responsibilities

Ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates
Training and overseeing an inmate work crew in electronics operations, building and grounds maintenance operations and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned tasks
Maintains safety and security of facility and work sites
Trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment and chemicals
Enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior
Initiates verbal reprimands when warranted
Physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or 'use of force' techniques
Monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to policy
Performs inmate counts and transportation
Responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to policy and writes and submits required reporting
Ensures the safe, efficient, compliant, and cost effective operations of assigned tasks and projects by performing 'hands on' work alongside inmate crew for facility electronics, building, and grounds repair and maintenance
Analyze, test, troubleshoot, repair, program, and establish the preventative maintenance program for numerous state of the art electronic security systems
Coordinate and perform electronics installations and repair for Colorado Correctional Center
Responsible for fire alarm systems including preventative maintenance on fire alarm heads, cleaning, and calibrating
Includes design, installation, daily maintenance, remodel and repair of facility buildings utilizing trades skills
Performs work on structures that are constructed of various materials
Includes design, installation daily maintenance and repair of facility grounds utilizing skills in irrigation pumps, sprinkler heads and lines, pipelines, valves, supply ditches, and gates
Provides supervision of assigned inmate work crew
Promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission and vision
Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures
Participates in inmate hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crews and training needs
Tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances
Inspects work and performs inmate evaluations
Reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry
May be required to supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors
May be called back to the facility and/or may be required to work additional hours or shifts to maintain safety and security
Working outside during inclement weather, working in close proximity to industrial equipment and in high, tight, and confined spaces

Required

Four (4) years of professional experience repairing, maintaining, installing, modifying, calibrating, adapting, and fabricating electronic systems in any combination of the following; Communication systems installation and repair, Programmable logic controller (PLC) programming and repair or installation, Repair and programming of fire and smoke detection and alarm systems, Closed circuit television installation and repair or installation, Repair of analog electronics that is progressive in nature
A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience, building equipment maintenance, and/or grounds maintenance
Correctional Experience - must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use, storage, and accountability; advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior, and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry
Building/Equipment Maintenance - includes planning, estimating and performing a variety of 'hands on' trades such as carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, welding, machinery/equipment repair, and/or electrical on residential, commercial or agricultural structures
Grounds Maintenance - includes planning, installation and/or maintenance of automated irrigation systems, comprehensive lawn care and a variety of other exterior work such as concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and/or snow removal
Must be 21 years of age
Possess a valid driver's license
Possess a high school diploma or GED
Have NO felony convictions
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States to be appointed to this position
Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training
Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders
Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments
Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
Willing and able to travel
Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule
TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire
