Tree Inspector/Natural Resources Technician or Intern

Responsibilities
Perform insect and disease inspections to urban forest and advise residents on insect, disease and other urban forest/landscape pests
Implement Dutch elm disease (DED), oak wilt, and emerald ash borer (EAB) sanitation programs, including identification and marking of diseased/infested trees, determining ownership of trees, completing related paperwork, delegating assignments to contractor and in-house crew, providing education to the public, and monitoring and enforcing diseased tree ordinance
Perform weed and rank vegetation inspections per city codes and enforce compliance
Advise residents on yard maintenance
Support Cartegraph (asset management program) and relevant GIS applications by inputting data
Execute invasive species identification and removal, enforce Visual Obstruction ordinance and private tree contractor licensing
Assist with community garden management
Assist with native plant installations and maintenance, and perennial gardens
Assist with boulevard tree planting program by preparing site, recommending tree species, recordkeeping, enforcing planting specifications with contactors, and other duties as needed
Perform physical labor in context of forestry, including tree pruning, small tree removals, tree crew duties, and other related tasks
Perform other duties and responsibilities as apparent or as assigned
Qualification
Required
Possession of MnDNR Tree Inspector License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
Ability to identify tree species common to Minnesota
Must have a valid Class D Minnesota Driver's License
Physical ability to perform all essential duties and responsibilities of the position
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with people from all cultures and backgrounds in order to achieve the city's strategic objectives for racial equity
Interns only: Currently enrolled in degree or certificate program or taking postsecondary courses related to urban forestry or natural resource management
Preferred
Completion of classes in dendrology, entomology, and plant pathology
Strong herbaceous plant identification skills
Demonstrated cultural competence and comfort with supporting the city's strategic objectives for racial equity
