Responsibilities
Directly handle assigned third party claims as well as UM/UIM exposures of mid to higher severity claims. Exposures include Auto BI, Auto PD, GL BI, GL PD, personal injury and advertising injury claims as well as UM/UIM exposures
Provide quality customer service and ensure timely coverage analysis and communication with insured(s) and carrier
Proactively investigate each claim with expedited and appropriate contact with relevant parties such as insureds, carrier, claimants, law enforcement agencies, witnesses, agents, medical providers and experts to determine the extent of liability, damages, and negligence apportionment. Interview and take statements to support the investigation
Identify, select, and direct appropriate internal and/or external resources for specific activities required to effectively evaluate claims, such as appraisers, subrogation, counsel, and experts
Verify the nature and extent of injury or damage by obtaining and reviewing appropriate records and damages documentation
Maintain and document claim file activities in accordance with established guidelines
Utilize diary management system to ensure all claims are handled timely. At required time intervals, evaluate liability & damages exposure
Establish and maintain proper indemnity & expense reserves
Develop and employ creative resolution strategies
Promptly negotiate proper disposition of claims with insureds and claimants or their legal representatives
Direct litigated claims and develop plans with defense counsel to assure effective resolution and strategy
Appropriately manage expenses for cost-effective resolution
Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trials, trials and all other legal proceedings, as needed
Update appropriate parties as needed, providing new facts as they become available, and their impact upon the liability analysis and settlement options
Appropriately deal with information that is considered personal and confidential
Fulfill specific service commitments with the carrier and always operate within specified authority
Actively provide mentoring and coaching to less experienced claim professionals to increase technical expertise
Share accountability with business partners to achieve and sustain quality results
Evaluate all claims for recovery potential; directly handle recovery efforts and/or engage and direct resources for recovery efforts
Qualification
Required
High School Degree or GED required with a minimum of 5 years claim handling experience
Experience utilizing computer technology; such as Microsoft Office, e-mail, Web-enabled applications, and database software
Ability to accurately compute a variety of numerical calculations required
Licensing Required: In order to perform the essential job functions of this job, acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) is required to comply with provincial and Company requirements
Moderate to advanced level of knowledge and skill in claim and litigation
Basic working level knowledge and skill in various business line products
Strong negotiation and customer service skills
Moderate to advanced claim and/or legal experience and the technical expertise to evaluate severe and complex claims
Able to make independent decisions on most assigned cases without involvement of supervisor
Openness to the ideas and expertise of others and willingness to solicit input and share ideas
Thorough understanding of commercial lines products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claim handling practices
Demonstrated coaching, influence and persuasion skills
Advanced written and verbal communication skills
Ability to adapt to and support cultural change
Strong technology aptitude; ability to use business technology tools to effectively research, track, and communicate information
Excellent reading, speaking, and writing of the ENGLISH language
Preferred
University/College degree or equivalent in business experience preferred
Ideal candidate for this role would have 8-10 plus years claims experience
