Engineering Assistant I - Decatur Area Office
The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a motivated individual to join their team as an Engineering Assistant I. This role involves performing engineering work, participating in training and continuing education, and supporting transportation-related activities under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.

Responsibilities
Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation
Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities
Assists during emergencies and inclement weather
Creates detailed PS&E
Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training, and continuing education
Performs design computations and plan preparations to include preparing plan sheets for construction projects
Performs engineering calculations for plan quantities as part of PS&E preparation activities
Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering
Prepares and checks plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and designs
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS
Safety Impact Certificate
Valid driver's license
Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program
No work experience is required
Some knowledge of applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and information technology related systems
Some knowledge of transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals
Some knowledge of applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
Some knowledge of plan review methods, processes and procedures
Some knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Proficient skill in research and analysis methodologies
Proficient skill in application of engineering fundamentals
Proficient skill in using engineering workstations and applications of engineering technology
Proficient skill in applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
Ability to exercise logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 pounds at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds
Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Walking - moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions
Required to work weekends and holidays
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements
