EHS Biosafety Specialist (Research Health & Safety)

Responsibilities
Conduct inspections for biosafety, animal safety and permitted materials
Review biosafety applications as part of the Institutional Biosafety Committee and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee approval process
Review biosafety and biosecurity protocols and conduct biosafety risk assessments
Investigate safety and health related incidents and complaints related to biological safety issues and recommend or coordinate corrective action
Develop, coordinate, and conduct biological health and safety education and training programs
Respond to inquiries from staff and faculty regarding occupational health, safety, and biological concerns
Prepare special and periodic reports, guidelines, manuals, newsletters, summaries, and bulletins
Assist with shipping biological materials domestically and internationally
Assist in the review of plans related to design, commissioning and maintenance of new and renovated spaces
Participate on the emergency response team as needed to respond to incidents involving hazardous materials, which may include biological, chemical, or radioactive substances
Qualification
Required
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, industrial hygiene or occupational health and safety
1-3 years of health and safety professional experience in laboratory safety, biosafety, public health, occupational health and safety or another appropriate science-related field
Reasonable knowledge of biosafety practices, industrial hygiene, occupational health, safety, engineering principles and practices, and rules/regulations related to biosafety
Reasonable knowledge of federal, state, and institutional health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA & MIOSHA, etc.) along with National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Standard, and standard microbiological practices (SMPs)
Knowledge of and ability to use computer applications, such as word processing, email, and databases
Work independently, exercise initiative and judgment, and provide follow-through with customers
IATA/DOT certification for shipping hazardous goods within one (1) year of employment
Must have a valid driver's license and ability to obtain commercial driver's license may be necessary
Must be able to pass physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
Preferred
A master's degree in microbiology, industrial hygiene or a related scientific field
Work experience in biosafety, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related scientific field
