Public Works Engineering Inspector
NEOGOV is seeking a Public Works Engineering Inspector to ensure quality, safety, and compliance in County construction projects. The role involves inspecting engineering design and construction projects, coordinating with contractors and engineers, and ensuring adherence to local and state codes.

Responsibilities
Independently inspect a wide range of engineering design and construction projects—helping ensure roads, bridges, drainage systems, and utilities are built to meet local and state codes, regulations, and engineering standards
Spend much of your time in the field inspecting work in progress, reviewing plans and specifications, and verifying grades, materials, and construction methods
Coordinate closely with contractors, engineers, and County departments, document findings, develop as-built drawings, and ensure accuracy in testing, reporting, and monthly pay requests
Observe specialized tests—such as pressure, vacuum, infiltration, and material sampling—review permit applications for technical accuracy, and identify opportunities for efficiency or cost savings
Investigate citizen complaints related to construction activities, traffic impacts, noise, or right-of-way issues, providing clear guidance and practical solutions
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by vocational or technical training in civil engineering, construction
Five (5) years of experience in utility and road construction, and inspection
Must maintain a valid driver's license
Depending on area of assignment, may be required to possess and maintain the following certifications: Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic, Work Zone Safety, Stormwater, Erosion, Sediment Control, Accessibility of Public Rights of Way, First Aid and CPR
Solid understanding of departmental policies, modern office practices, and the regulations governing public works, utility, and subdivision construction
Knowledge includes drainage facilities, streets and sidewalks, excavation and erosion control, and water and wastewater distribution and collection systems
Comfortable interpreting construction plans, diagrams, and blueprints
Strong grasp of quality control practices, confined space safety, and trenching and shoring techniques
Skilled in using hand tools and electronic locating equipment, including underground utility locators and ground-penetrating radar
Proficient with standard office software and equipment to maintain accurate records and reports
Organized and dependable, able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to varying work hours as construction schedules demand
Clear communication skills, able to exercise sound judgment when applying and enforcing codes and policies
Ability to provide guidance to contractors and the public, and build effective working relationships with colleagues, service providers, and community members
Able to operate a motor vehicle and balance fieldwork with administrative responsibilities
