Deputy Director of People & Operations

The Fair Budget Coalition (FBC) is hiring its first Deputy Director of People and Operations to shape the systems, culture, and backbone of the organization as it grows the budget justice movement in DC. This role will oversee human resources, events, finance, and operations while ensuring a people-first culture grounded in values of equity and collaboration.

Responsibilities

Build and care for the systems that keep our coalition strong, accountable, and rooted in our values
Lead and support FBC’s events and logistics, including contract management, venue management, and participant logistics
Manage FBC’s list servs and calendars
Oversee technology tools so staff, members, and donors have what they need to engage effectively
Lead development and care of a CRM to track membership, donor engagement, and coalition relationships
Manage website updates and vendor contracts, keeping the site current and accessible
Create clear processes for communications, budgeting, staff development, and issue group coordination
Keep resources and guides up to date so staff, Board, and coalition members can move together with clarity
Manage relationships with vendors and consultants to ensure smooth day-to-day operations
Support staff in using tools and systems, ensuring they are easy to use and aligned with our collective goals
Partner with the ED to maintain a people-first culture grounded in radical authenticity, collaboration, principled struggle and collective care
Collaborate with the ED to shape organizational growth and structure
Create opportunities for staff development, shared learning, and values-driven practice
Build and refine HR processes and tools that help staff and coalition partners thrive
Partner with the ED and the Executive Committee (the Board) on financial planning, budgeting, and reporting to ensure organizational sustainability
Oversee day-to-day financial systems, including record-keeping, grants calendar, forecasting, and cash flow
Collaborate with the fiscal sponsor to ensure accurate payroll, HR, benefits, and vendor payments
Manage vendor relationships and contracts
Prepare financial reports and documents (budgets, projections, income statements) for funders and stakeholders
Work in person with the advocacy and organizing team one or two days weekly, showing up for events and base-building efforts
Contribute to a collaborative culture by attending weekly staff meetings, team check-ins, annual staff retreats, and helping to build agendas and facilitate conversations
Showing up in community spaces, such as town-halls, Coalition gatherings and offering public testimonies during budget season as part of our shared commitment to budget justice

Required

Grounded in DC or in other local community organizing, the ideal candidate will bring a passion for and deep commitment to racial and economic justice, with an understanding of structural racism and liberatory practices
3-5 years financial management and HR experience, ideally in grassroots, advocacy, or movement spaces
5-7 years Operations experience, ideally in grassroots, advocacy, or movement spaces
Skilled in managing budgets, strengthening systems and supporting staff growth
Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to work collaboratively
Exceptional project management skills and the ability to handle complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable outcomes in a dynamic environment
Approaches the work with humility, curiosity, and a sense of humor
Experience in conflict resolution, grounded in practices that honor relationships and community
Someone who can grasp the subtleties and nuances of complex issues and identify patterns in challenges. Someone who can lead insightful, pragmatic, equitable, and sustainable ways to tackle common challenges and produce positive change
A skilled people manager and leader who models integrity, accountability, trustworthiness, and empathy with deep self-awareness and emotional intelligence

Preferred

A degree or certification relevant to the role
CRM experience
Experience supervising people and teams
Experience developing and/or leading trainings that maximize individual and organizational goals
Experience building continuous feedback and performance structures
