The Civil Division of the Department of Justice is responsible for litigating significant cases involving national security, immigration, and federal statutes. The Paralegal Specialist will assist attorneys with drafting legal documents, conducting research, and managing communications with various legal entities.

Responsibilities

Assists attorneys in drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, subpoenas, and other papers in cases handled by the Office/Branch
Participates in pre-trial witness conferences in order to note additional matters to investigate prior to trial. Analyzes assigned documents for supportive evidence, organizing and writing synopses for use of Office/Branch attorneys
Interfaces with the federal courts and client agencies to gather important information in support of the assigned attorney's defense of emergency and other litigation
Handles correspondence between client agencies, U.S. Attorneys' Offices, and opposing counsel, performing primary and legal research when required
Independently conducts legal research on statues, legislative history, regulations and administrative and judicial precedents
Proofreads and cite-checks legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents
Drafts correspondence, pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents
Drafts discovery requests, subpoenas, stipulations, and affidavits and other documents necessary for evidentiary development
Interfaces with the client agency representatives, attorneys, officers of the court and potential witnesses

Required

You must be a United States Citizen or National
You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening
You may be required to complete a probationary or trial period
Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31, 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file
You must meet all eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement and continue to meet these requirements throughout the hiring process. Offers can be rescinded if requirements are not met
To qualify for the position of Paralegal Specialist, at GS-0950-9/11 you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below
For the GS-9 Paralegal Specialist position, you must demonstrate that you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the federal service performing such duties as: assisting staff attorneys in preparing pleadings or briefs, analyzing factual data, preparing exhibits and legislative histories, and performing research into factual or legal aspects of assigned cases
OR Have a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or successfully completed at least 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, OR received an LLB or J.D
OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%
For the GS-11 Paralegal Specialist position, you must demonstrate you have one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-9 level in the federal service performing such duties as: reviewing and analyzing case materials; verifying citations and legal references to ensure accuracy; independently conduct legal research of assigned cases; drafting correspondence; and analyzing documents for supportive evidence
OR Have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree or received an LLM or successfully completed at least 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field that is directly related to the duties of this position
OR Have a combination of graduate education and experience, as described above, that meets 100% of the requirements
