ASSISTANT STATE MATERIALS ENGINEER

State of Arizona Enterprise Technology (ASET) is seeking an Assistant State Materials Engineer to be part of an innovative and collaborative team driving a safer transportation system for Arizona. This role acts as a technical consultant on materials-related matters and manages multiple laboratories statewide, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and practices.

Responsibilities

Manages and supervises professional subordinates performing complex engineering assignments and highly skilled technicians carrying out complex tests and performing mix designs
Provides leadership in all administrative activities of the work area, including personnel administration, purchasing, equipment maintenance and records management
Provides expert technical consultation on materials related matters to ADOT and to contractors and suppliers
Evaluates and implements new products and technology relative to test procedures and materials
Interprets and analyzes engineering data to determine acceptability of materials
Represents ADOT at meetings with FHWA, Local Public agencies, consultants, and industry
Writes and reviews complex and highly technical specifications, test methods, technical reports and policy directives
Writes correspondence and budget request
Coordinates responses to American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Product Evaluation and Audit Solutions (PEAS)
Represents Materials Group at technical, design, construction and staff meetings, including local and out of state conferences and workshops
Visits construction work locations and field laboratories to assist in the resolution of problems and determine quality and status of work

Required

Minimum 5 years of engineering experience plus a minimum of 3 years of supervisory and management experience
Experience in highway materials testing and research
Arizona PE Licensure is required for this position
A candidate who holds an active PE in another state will be required to meet registration requirements set forth by the Arizona Technical Board of Registration and attain an Arizona PE from the Board within 6 months of employment start date
Valid driver's license
Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks
Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training
An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance
