Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/2 (Electrical System Engineer)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an Electrical System Engineer specializing in low voltage systems, and instrumentation & controls. The successful candidate will support the Laboratory's mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical engineering matters and perform engineering studies related to electrical safety and power quality.

Responsibilities

Support the Laboratory's mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical engineering matters
Perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs
Qualify as a Cognitive System Engineer (CSE) on one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) that support LANL Nuclear Facilities
Work alongside junior and senior engineers to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring and leadership
Assist with preparing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems
Assist with collection of the usage, process, safety, and other parameters of interest for the structure, system, or component
Assist with design or analysis tasks, and preparation of design concepts that meet the requirements
Assist with developing design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements
Assist with evaluating and trending system health
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design
Communicate well, both written and verbally

Required

Awareness of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices
Awareness of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices
Knowledge of analysis and calculations techniques to support engineered solutions
Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel
Working knowledge of Microsoft software products (i.e. Word, Excel, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, etc.)
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 2 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above
Electrical engineering degree is highly desired
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above
Advanced electrical engineering or technical degree is highly desired
Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable

Preferred

Knowledge of controls related to equipment operation such as PLCs and relay control
Knowledge of low voltage electrical systems as they relate to commercial, industrial, or nuclear facilities
Knowledge of the engineering design process and/or maintenance of low voltage systems
Knowledge of the engineering design process and/or maintenance of instrumentation & control systems
Knowledge of codes and standards, to include but not limited to NQA-1, ISA, IBC, IEBC, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and NFPA 780
Experience with supporting safety analyses and hazards evaluations
Experience in the use of SKM software
Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures
