Responsibilities

Evaluates crew medical fitness fir duty onboard: Reviews and interprets Pre-Employment and Re-Employment Medical Examinations (PEME/REME) under MVAS and international maritime medical guidelines to determine fitness for duty
Manages complex medical cases: Facilitates review of borderline cases, arranges second opinions, and ensures crew understanding of treatment plans, surgical procedures, and associated risks
Plans and oversees medical care and benefits: Coordinates medical care through local port agents, intermediaries, or designated providers until the crew member reaches Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI), ensuring timely and compliant delivery of services
Maintains accurate documentation: Updates case status and treatment plans in SharePoint biweekly or as required by severity, and ensures all medical documents and receipts are properly filed for reimbursement
Collaborates across departments: Works closely with Fleet HR and Legal concerning crew medical care and legal issues relating to same. Coordinates with Finance and Accounting to process wages and reimbursements
Communicates with stakeholders: Responds to PEME/REME inquiries from crew, internal departments, and medical facilities; provides status updates; and facilitates communication with crew members’ families regarding medical status and company actions
Ensures compliance and privacy: Safeguards Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA and GDPR regulations and adheres to applicable maritime and federal laws
Monitors treatment and cost containment: Confirms adherence to treatment plans, negotiates favorable rates for medical services worldwide, and exercises judgment to identify high-exposure cases requiring cost control measures
Coordinates critical medical logistics: Liaises with shoreside and onboard teams for medical disembarkations, repatriations, serious illnesses, deaths, and oversees arrangements for medical escorts or air ambulance evacuations globally

Required

Licensed healthcare professional (RN, LPN, or Foreign Medical Graduate)
Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience in medical, surgical, emergency, or multispecialty care
Strong understanding of Maritime Medical Standards, MVAS guidelines, and International Labor Organization medical requirements
Proficient in evaluating medical documentation and determining fitness for duty
Skilled in case management, including coordination of medical care, repatriation, and cost containment strategies
Ability to exercise independent judgment in high-exposure cases and negotiate favorable medical service rates
Excellent communication skills for interacting with crew members, families, medical providers, and internal departments
High level of organizational skills for maintaining accurate documentation in systems like SharePoint and SeaCare
Knowledge of HIPAA and GDPR regulations to ensure privacy and compliance
Ability to work collaboratively with HR, Legal, and Finance teams and manage sensitive situations with discretion
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management platforms

Preferred

1 year of maritime medical operations experience or occupational health case management
Experience in risk management and compliance with international maritime medical standards
