The City & Borough of Juneau is seeking to fill two Operator-In-Training (OIT) I - Equipment Operator II (Flex) positions within the Streets & Fleet Maintenance Division. The role involves the safe operation of heavy equipment and performing various tasks associated with street maintenance, including snow and ice control, while ensuring safety and efficiency in all operations.

Responsibilities

Operating heavy and light-duty equipment
Asphalt patching
Maintenance of all vegetation, signs, barricades, fences, bridges, culverts and drainage structures, and road surfaces within the City Right-of-way (ROW)
Performing traffic control duties including flagging
Performing snow and ice control as well as gravel road maintenance
Working outdoors in hot, cold, and/or wet weather conditions
Heavy lifting
Performing physically demanding tasks

Required

Have skills in the safe operation of heavy equipment
Have a strong work ethic and desire to learn
Have reliable and consistent attendance
Are able to be polite and courteous to the public
Are safety conscious in the performance of work
Have the ability to work with others to accomplish tasks and projects
Will be available to work overtime during weather events
Can be relied on to respond to unplanned request to work during off hours during weather events
A valid Alaska driver's license at time of appointment
Requires a valid Class “B” State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License valid for vehicles equipped with airbrakes and a Tanker (N) endorsement within six (6) months of appointment and for continued employment
Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent) within six (6) months of appointment and for continued employment
Within six (6) months of appointment as Equipment Operator-in-Training I employee must obtain a Class “B” State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License valid for vehicles equipped with airbrakes, manual transmissions, and Tanker (N) endorsement
Within six (6) months of appointment as Equipment Operator-in-Training I employee must obtain Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent)
Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement at time of application
Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent) within 6 months of appointment and for continued employment
Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement at time of application, however, must obtain valid Class “A” State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement by time of appointment if selected
Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent) within 6 months of appointment and for continued employment
Three (3) years of heavy equipment operations, maintenance, or construction experience
Demonstrated proficiency on a motor grader regardless of conditions or ability to achieve proficiency within three (3) months of appointment and for continued employment
Completion of a CBJ equipment operation-training program may substitute for one year of specialized experience
Valid Class “A” State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement by time of appointment if selected
Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent) within 6 months of appointment and for continued employment
Attendance at and certification (as available) in CPR, First Aid, and Confined Space Entrant and/or attendant within 18 months of appointment

Preferred

Preferred experience includes operating heavy and light motorized equipment including front-end loaders, backhoes, and dump trucks in hauling biosolid materials, the construction and/or maintenance of streets, roadways, utilities, airport runways, airport taxiways, airport ramps, and/or airport aprons, using hand and power tools, performing minor servicing of equipment and applying safety procedures
