Responsibilities

Interview patients for pre-admission or upon presentation for service to ensure demographic and insurance information is complete and accurate
Collect and verify identification, demographic, physician, and insurance information
Enter, validate, and audit patient data in financial and registration systems such as STAR, Pathways Healthcare Scheduling, and Cerner
Generate reports to support pre-registration and scheduled procedures
Obtain required patient signatures, including consent to treat, assignment of benefits, and Medicare forms
Verify insurance coverage, eligibility, and network status through online systems, payer websites, and phone inquiries
Obtain and document verification of benefits (VOB), including co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles, and out-of-pocket limits
Coordinate pre-certifications and authorizations for surgeries, procedures, and ancillary services
Follow up with physician offices when pre-certification or authorization is incomplete
Accurately document authorizations and release accounts appropriately to support timely claims filing
Collect applicable co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles at the time of service
Post patient payments, issue receipts, and reconcile cash drawer at the end of each shift
Refer patients to Financial Counselors or Eligibility Specialists for assistance with outstanding balances or financial concerns
Clearly explain financial responsibilities and insurance coverage to patients and families
Answer incoming calls and communicate professionally with patients, departments, and physician offices
Escort patients to assigned locations as needed and prepare charts and identification bands
Maintain strong patient relations and provide world-class customer service at all times
Process utilization review emails, physician orders, patient type changes, and related documentation
Run mismatch, pre-registration, and other operational reports as required
Prepare patient statistics and reports as requested by management
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
Participate in department meetings, complete mandatory education, and maintain required certifications

Required

Minimum 1 year of recent experience in patient access, medical front desk, or a similar healthcare role
Strong customer service and communication skills

Ability to remain calm, professional, and accurate in a fast-paced emergency department environment
