Responsibilities

Support the New York State (NYS) Department of Heath Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) program
Join our talented Architecture Team with oversight of the information architecture
Play a crucial role in the planning strategic direction and define the guiding principles that shape our software, data and technology adoption practices
Be a part of the DBA team supporting the NYS MMIS
Responsible for the maintenance and support of multiple high volume multi-terabyte DB2 LUW, PostgreSQL, MongoDB and DB2 z/OS databases
Work with the development team to understand requirements and create structures to accommodate them
Responsible for trouble shooting and database and SQL performance tuning

Required

3 + years of related experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred
3+ years of database experience in a distributed environment; Mainframe and Open Systems are required
Strong SQL proficiency and hands-on database administration experience
Performance tuning and optimization (indexing strategy, query tuning, execution plan analysis)
Database backup and recovery design and execution
High availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) configuration and support
Monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning for production databases
Scripting for automation (SQL, Bash, or Python)
DB2 (LUW) administration experience, including: DB2 HADR configuration and management, Tablespace, buffer pool, and storage optimization, Backup/restore operations using db2backup/db2restore, Performance troubleshooting via db2pd, snapshot monitors, db2expl
Ability to design, implement, and maintain secure database environments
Understanding of RBAC, least-privilege access, and secure authentication practices
Experience with patching, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration baselines
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including root-cause analysis
Ability to create clear documentation and operational runbooks
Ability to collaborate effectively with developers, DevOps/SRE, and security teams
Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments and participate in on-call rotations
Strong ownership mindset and commitment to database reliability and performance
Experience in a high-volume mission critical environment with strict performance Service Levels

Preferred

Experience with monitoring and observability platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK)
Airflow or other workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Prefect, Dagster)
Advanced database security practices: Audit logging, database activity monitoring, Data masking, tokenization, field-level encryption, Key management (KMS/HSM), certificate rotation, Understanding of compliance frameworks (HIPAA, NIST800)
Experience with event streaming and CDC
Exposure to DB2 pureScale or advanced clustering architectures
Advanced MongoDB experience (sharding, advanced performance tuning)
MongoDB administrative experience, including replica sets, indexing, query tuning, basic security configuration, and backup/restore
Managing database disaster recovery
Experience with healthcare claims processing desirable
