Building Plans Examiner I & II (Structural) #2026-025
The City of Pompano Beach is seeking a Building Plans Examiner I & II to enforce local, state, and federal regulations, ensuring public safety and compliance through plan reviews, consultations, and inspections. The role involves reviewing construction projects, consulting with stakeholders, and conducting inspections to maintain code compliance.

Responsibilities
Reviews new construction and Level I–III alteration projects for compliance with code and safety standards
Examines documentation and specifications for quick service permit types in residential, commercial, and public buildings
Consults with architects, engineers, contractors, and owners regarding permit applications
Generates permits, calculates fees, verifies contractor credentials, and serves as expert witness when required
May conduct verification inspections for in-progress or completed work
Investigates complaints of alleged code violations and recommends corrective action
Performs specialized evaluations (Accessibility, Change of Use, NPDES, DRC, RS Means, SI/SD) when requested
Participates in pre-application/pre-construction meetings, emergency damage assessments, and annual inspections of larger buildings
Retains certification through continuing education and uses required technology/software
Performs related duties as assigned
All duties of Plans Examiner I plus the following:
Reviews large and complex projects for compliance with code and safety standards
Examines documentation and specifications for all new or altered residential, commercial, and public buildings
Performs field inspections to gain a deeper understanding of complex projects
Conducts specialized evaluations (Accessibility, Change of Use, NPDES, DRC, RS Means, SI/SD) as part of routine responsibilities
Maintains service cycle times for all assigned examinations
Perform related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum of 5 years combined construction experience, including: 3 years in a supervisory role, 2 years in plans examination and inspections, 2 years in High Velocity Hurricane Zone construction (Structural positions only)
Eligible for certification as a Plans Examiner by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (per Chapter 1, Section 104 of Broward County amendments to the Florida Building Code)
Eligible for certification as a Plans Examiner by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board
Licensed Design Professional or Certified Contractor
Valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record
Knowledge of construction methods/materials, codes, and inspection procedures
Ability to read and interpret plans, specs, and blueprints
Strong leadership, organization, and time management skills
Clear written/verbal communication; effective with diverse groups
Proficient with permit systems, office technology, and accurate recordkeeping; maintains ethical conduct and reliability
Ability to see, hear, speak, read, and operate standard office equipment
Primarily sedentary with occasional fieldwork requiring lifting up to 20 lbs., standing/walking/climbing/bending/kneeling/reaching
May be exposed to weather, noise, odors, and hazardous construction site conditions
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Construction, Construction Management, or related field
