Responsibilities
Analyze and understand legacy COBOL systems (COBOL, COBOL-II, Enterprise COBOL) running on z/OS and OS/390
Review complex COBOL structures including:
GO TO logic, PERFORM THRU flows
COPYBOOKS, REDEFINES, RENAMES
File definitions (FD/SD) and Data Division structures
Validate AI-generated insights such as:
Control-flow and data-flow diagrams
Business-rule extraction
Program execution paths and dependency maps
Work closely with the platform team to help identify:
Embedded business rules and workflows
Transaction processing (CICS/IMS)
Database access (DB2 cursors)
File handling (VSAM KSDS/ESDS/RRDS)
Support modernization and cloud-migration efforts by:
Interpreting AI-extracted logic
Assisting with refactoring and modularization
Mapping COBOL logic to modern platforms (Java, .NET, APIs, microservices)
Review and validate automated testing outputs, including:
Regression test plans
Change-impact analysis
Batch job and JCL dependencies
Provide subject-matter expertise on:
Mainframe best practices
Program flow, call chains, and data dependencies
Understanding and documenting complex legacy systems
Assist with customer onboarding by explaining AI-generated documentation, business-process diagrams, and technical artifacts to developers, analysts, and QA teams
Qualification
Required
5+ years of hands-on COBOL experience (Enterprise COBOL, COBOL 390, or Micro Focus)
Strong knowledge of JCL, VSAM, DB2, CICS, IMS
Batch and online processing
EBCDIC data formats
Proven experience working with large, complex legacy codebases
Ability to understand deeply nested business logic and cross-program dependencies
Experience with mainframe security: RACF, Top Secret, or ACF2
Dataset access control and audit compliance
Familiarity with legacy system documentation and business-logic extraction
Comfortable working with AI-assisted engineering tools and validating their outputs
