Responsibilities

You will serve as a Lead Firefighter and be responsible for providing aircraft crash fire protection, structural fire protection, vessel fire protection, hazardous materials response, weapons of mass destruction, confined space rescue, and emergency medical assistance services
Customer groups include Coast Guard commands and personnel, the City of Kodiak, Womens Bay Community, Bayside Community and other outlying island communities, in compliance with a mutual aid agreements, and the Kodiak Airport per the State Airport Agreement
The position performs leadership and technical duties
The incumbent works shifts and day work schedules to meet mission and staffing requirements and is subject to recall from an off-duty status
Performing/directing the performance of routine tests, inspections, and servicing functions on all fire department equipment and fire apparatus (following manufacturer's specifications)
Providing guidance and direction (mentoring) to subordinate staff (Firefighter-Driver/Operators, ILS or BLS) and/or new work force staff regarding station operations to meet the goals and objectives of the department
Maintaining organizational harmony and exercising personal discipline in support of management's goals and objectives
Leading company fire and safety inspections of Base Kodiak facilities and fire extinguishers, conducts and/or assists with the performance of basic fire investigations
Controlling and extinguishing fires in situations involving hazards that are difficult to recognize such as in storage facilities for large quantities of exotic or conventional fuels, explosives, chemicals, or other highly unstable materials
Assisting in determining compliance status of inspected sites for use in inspection and enforcement targeting, identifying potential violators, and innovative compliance settlements
Reviewing engineering drawings, blueprints, and building specifications to ensure that building maintenance and repair, modifications, renovations, and new construction projects incorporate fire-safety standards and criteria

Must be registered or exempt from the Selective Service
A one-year probationary period may be required

Selectee must be able to obtain/maintain a valid state driver's license

All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit
This position requires the selectee to pass a pre-employment drug test
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-8 grade level in the federal sector
Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications
