Associate General Counsel

Sound Physicians is a physician-founded and led, national, multi-specialty medical group. The Associate General Counsel is responsible for the administrative or legal affairs of the corporation, primarily focusing on contracting and providing legal services across various matters within the organization.

Responsibilities

Negotiate, prepare, draft, review, approve and interpret contracts and other legal instruments including but not limited to hospital agreements, vendor agreements, corporate transaction documents, managed care, and physician services agreements
Interpret and implement applicable state and federal laws, rules and policies. Prepare memoranda and correspondence responding to questions of law and policy
Perform or oversee the performance of legal research necessary to draft and analyze various contracts, policies, and other documents to advise internal clients
Provide counsel on health care laws including those on privacy, government programs, fraud and abuse, physician self-referral and anti-kickback laws, and EMTALA
Provide guidance on billing, coding, and other reimbursement matters for compliance with government and commercial health plan requirements
In collaboration with compliance staff, review and monitor compliance policies and procedures and work closely with compliance to investigate and resolve compliance concerns
Provide counsel for legal aspects of patient care with significant medico-legal dimensions, including informed consent, medical records/privacy issues, and patients’ rights issues
Provide advice and counsel in conflicts of interest and other related compliance issues
Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in corporate and healthcare law and in other related areas

Required

Juris Doctorate (JD) Degree; admitted to practice; member of the bar
5+ years increasingly responsible law firm and in-house experience, preferably in a healthcare environment
Significant knowledge of laws and regulations regarding health care regulatory, corporate, compliance and transactional matters (e.g., Stark Law, Anti-kickback Statute, HIPAA, professional fee coding and documentation)
Demonstrated negotiating experience
Exposure to and/or familiarity with the following areas of law: healthcare regulatory, and contracts
Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside attorneys, senior management, and business associates
Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive situations and confidential information. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, diplomacy, and good judgment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
