Applied R&D Mechanical Engineer

Richland Glass Company, Inc. is seeking an Applied R&D Mechanical Engineer to drive continuous improvement and innovation in manufacturing operations. Responsibilities

Lead initiatives to reduce manufacturing costs through process optimization, improved material utilization, and waste reduction
Improve job quality, capability, and repeatability by enhancing manufacturing processes and controls
Increase overall packaging efficiency by reducing cycle time, improving machine speed, and optimizing equipment performance
Identify and implement best practices to improve manufacturing processes, equipment, systems, and machinery
Design, develop, test, and validate new products, manufacturing methods, and production equipment
Research and evaluate new manufacturing technologies, materials, and automation solutions
Support the development and qualifications of new equipment, tooling, fixtures, and programs
Fabricate prototypes and conduct trials to validate designs and production methods
Increase productivity by integrating mechanical and electronic systems to support production and engineering operations
Generate detailed AutoCAD drawings for both product designs and engineering/manufacturing applications
Provide technical input and design support for product development, equipment design, and process improvement projects
Support engineering activities across design, fabrication, testing, quality, manufacturing, and R&D functions
Work closely with Sales and Production teams to support new product development and customer requirements
Assist in technical evaluations, feasibility studies, and development of customer-specific products
Provide engineering support for technical sales activities when required

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline required
3–7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and/or R&D
Hands-on experience with product development, equipment design, and prototype fabrication
Must be able to read/write/communicate in English
Strong mechanical design and engineering fundamentals
Proficiency in AutoCAD for creating detailed product and engineering drawings
Experience with manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, and equipment design
Working knowledge of automation systems, sensors, vision systems, and basic controls
Ability to test, troubleshoot, and validate mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
Familiarity with quality systems, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, or similar)
Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate processes and identify improvement opportunities
Effective troubleshooting skills in both production and development environments
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including Sales, Production, Quality, and Management
Capable of translating technical concepts into practical manufacturing solutions
Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership and accountability
Innovative mindset with a passion for continuous improvement and technology advancement
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving manufacturing needs
Demonstrated accountability for safety practices and adherence to OSHA standards
Ability to maintain an organized, clean, and efficient work area
Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 lbs. consistently
Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 30 lbs. occasionally
Ability to walk/stand/bend/stoop/kneel/reach and perform repetitive motions consistently throughout the shift
Ability to visually perform detailed inspections of product quality and machine performance
Ability to audibly detect machine performance

Preferred

Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred
Experience working within the custom glass product related to life sciences and commercial applications
Exposure to automation, vision systems, and integrated mechanical/electrical systems strongly preferred
OSHA 10 preferred
