Transportation Engineer Specialist I or II
The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Engineer Specialist to perform advanced drafting, calculations, and design work. The role involves preparing PS&E packages for traffic signals, ITS, and roadway illumination projects, and supporting traffic studies.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Assists in writing general notes, specifications and provisions
Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features
Performs traffic engineering design work, analyzes traffic and accident data and recommends solutions for traffic problems
Prepares field notes
Prepares quantity summaries
Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, and signal plans
Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors
Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for design meetings
Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, and signal lighting design
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Includes all essential duties listed for Transportation Engineer Specialist I as well as: Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications
Writes general notes, specifications and provisions
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
6 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle

7 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Preferred
Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads, or AutoCAD for plan preparation
Previous work on traffic signal, Intelligent Transportation Systems, or roadway illumination projects
Familiarity with traffic engineering principles, construction plans, and design standards
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Relevant certifications are a plus
