Responsibilities

Research and analyze law sources such as federal and state constitutions, statues, administrative codes, recorded judicial decisions and legal articles
Assist inmates/residents in accessing the court system and providing assistance in the preparation of pleadings or petitions for filing
Prepare written legal memoranda on specific topics as assigned, to include contracts, brief, pleadings, appeals, buy-sell agreements, closing papers and binders, deeds and trust interments for review, approval and use by attorney
Investigate facts and law of case to determine causes of action and to prepare case accordingly
File or coordinate the filing of pleadings
Develop and maintain a system for tracking corporate contracts and contractual amendments
Act as law librarian; set up and maintain accurate, complete and appropriate reference library, to include monitoring and updating legal volumes and related materials
Assist in overseeing management of inmate law libraries tin accordance with applicable rules, regulations, policies, procedures, to include ordering necessary books and developing inventory control procedures
Provide technical assistance in areas of expertise to department heads and facility administrators, as needed
Participate, as requested, in the review of corporate and facility policies and procedures; prepare revisions for approval
Maintain confidential files
Answer telephone, route calls and/or take accurate and legible messages
Input text accurately and produce finished documents efficiently using a typewriter and/or word processing and spreadsheet programs on a computerized system to include Microsoft Word and Lotus/Excel; copy, compile and distribute as necessary
Independently edit documents making necessary corrections or revisions to include spelling, grammar and sentence structure
Prepare correspondence, statistical reports and/or other documents; independently edit documents making necessary corrections or revisions to include spelling, grammar and sentence structure
Using electronic spreadsheet set up and accurately maintains complex statistical information and data files
Thoroughly, neatly and legibly complete required forms, reports or records as required and follow requirements for timely submitting of documents
Communicate effectively and coherently with staff and visitors, to telephone contacts; answer telephone, route calls an/or take accurate and legible messages; respond to verbal/written inquiries and requests or refer to appropriate staff member; give information and directions; mediate disputes; advise of rights and processes
Demonstrate communication skills, including providing reliable testimony, in court and other formal settings as the need may arise
Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
Attend scheduled staff meetings, promote communications and the proper flow of relevant information between staff
Create and/or maintain general files in an organized manner, to include sorting, labeling, filing and retrieving, in accordance with corporate and facility file retention and storage procedures; prevent unauthorized access to the records; and maintain confidentiality and security of records
Read and comprehend legal documents, correspondence, handwritten text, policies, regulations, procedures, reports, directions for form completion and other simple or complex documents
Report to direct supervisor on a regular basis concerning litigation or special assignments
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form
Add, subtract, multiple and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to particle situations
Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of others encountered in an antagonistic environment
Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering basic emergency medical aid and CPR, physically removing people away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from confined areas; and instructing trainees in the these areas
Endeavor to comply with all applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CCA, ACA and/or contracting agency
Operate a vehicle during both the day and night where driving conditions can include congested traffic and unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, rain, ice and snow
Domestic U. S. travel is required; international travel may also be necessary

Required

High school diploma, GED certification or equivalent
Graduate from a paralegal or legal assistance program or have at least two years supervised experience as a paralegal or legal assistant
A valid driver's license is required
Must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word for Windows, lotus 1-2-3 and other computer applications
Minimum age requirement: Must be at least 18 years of age
