Responsibilities
Lead the replatforming and rebuild of the company’s core marketplace application
Evaluate the existing monolithic PHP/Laravel environment and determine what can be reused versus replaced
Guide the transition toward a more scalable, service-oriented architecture
Provide hands-on architectural direction across backend, frontend, and infrastructure
Establish a clear execution roadmap with milestones, priorities, and timelines
Lead and manage a small, distributed engineering team through a rebuild phase
Assess current engineers for skill fit and determine retraining, reassignment, or hiring needs
Hire additional engineers as needed, including leveraging personal networks where applicable
Set clear engineering standards, accountability, and delivery expectations
Improve performance, page load times, and scalability through better architecture and CDN usage
Collaborate with leadership to ensure rebuild decisions align with business priorities
Qualification
Required
Deep experience refactoring large PHP monoliths or similar legacy stacks into service-oriented or microservice architectures
Proven experience replatforming or rebuilding production systems
Experience working with or migrating away from legacy monolithic applications
Strong architectural background with modern web and backend systems
Strong full-stack capability, including backend development using modern languages such as Node.js, TypeScript, and/or Go, paired with modern frontend frameworks, APIs, and integration patterns
Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code or multi-agent workflows, to accelerate reading, refactoring, and generation of production-quality code
Solid understanding of performance optimization, CDN architecture, and media-heavy or transaction-heavy applications
Strong background in debugging complex production issues and designing for reliability and observability
Ability to design a target architecture with clear domain boundaries, service contracts, data migration strategies, and a strangler-fig approach to safely decomposing a monolith
Experience leading end-to-end migrations, including phased planning, milestone definition, risk management, and avoiding high-risk 'big-bang' rewrites
Strong security, payments, and compliance mindset, ideally with prior experience supporting marketplaces or platforms with trust and safety constraints
Experience with modern frontend frameworks and service-based architectures
Background in e-commerce, creator platforms, or other content-heavy marketplaces
Experience leading engineering teams as a VP of Engineering, Director of Engineering, or senior hands-on technical lead
Ability to mentor engineers and provide hands-on technical guidance
Comfort acting as both architect and hands-on individual contributor, owning critical technical paths while collaborating with existing developers as domain experts
Comfort working in a remote, globally distributed team environment
Prior experience inheriting small teams and rebuilding engineering discipline
Ability to bring trusted engineers from prior teams or networks
High integrity, accountability, and ownership mindset
Clear communication with non-technical stakeholders, translating technical risk and trade-offs into timelines, budgets, and business impact
