Trades Generalist

New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is seeking a Trades Generalist responsible for various skilled trades including carpentry, plumbing, electric, motor equipment, small engine repair, or masonry. The role involves performing maintenance and repair tasks, planning projects, and supervising staff.

Responsibilities

Performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades
Plan and lay out projects
Supervise and train others
Read and interpret plans
Directing facility maintenance
Supervising lower-level staff

Required

Non-competitive: four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment
Candidates must have the ability to understand and carry out instructions, including written material
Must have knowledge of good safety practices
Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor
Must have the ability to operate a variety of driven machinery, including but not limited to: backhoe, skid-steer, dump truck
Must receive or possess chainsaw training within the probationary period as well as maintain strong tree cutting / felling skills as a term and condition of employment
Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State or obtain one within one year at their own expense and maintain it as a term and condition of employment
Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The candidate is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing
