Responsibilities
Lead early-phase engineering efforts for new load requests and substation development projects
Partner closely with Transmission Planning to support technical decisions around:
Substation location and siting
Voltage levels and system configuration
Integration with existing transmission infrastructure
Perform planning and feasibility studies to support project development (e.g., load, facilities, and planning-level evaluations)
Develop conceptual substation designs, including:
Substation layout concepts and structure placement
Transformer sizing and configuration recommendations
Feeder, supply, and transmission tie-in concepts
Create and refine early design deliverables such as:
Single-line diagrams
General arrangement concepts
Preliminary bills of material / equipment lists
Support outage planning and constructability considerations at a conceptual level
Package study results and technical recommendations for internal stakeholders and external customers
Refine scope for project approval and support development of bid requests for external engineering partners
Transition approved projects to external execution teams for detailed design and construction
Provide upstream technical support during execution to ensure alignment with original scope and design intent
Manage a portfolio of approximately 5–10 substation projects at a time
Typical project size around ~50 MW (varies based on customer need and system requirements)
Mix of greenfield substations and brownfield rebuilds/extensions
Early-phase initiation can span several months up to one year depending on project complexity
Qualification
Required
Experience supporting substation engineering, transmission planning, interconnection, or power systems engineering in a utility or consulting environment
Strong understanding of electrical system configuration, load growth drivers, and planning-level engineering studies
Ability to develop and communicate conceptual designs and technical recommendations
Comfortable working cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and interfacing with customers on technical topics
Familiarity with early design deliverables such as one-lines, layouts, and preliminary equipment scoping
Preferred
Experience supporting both greenfield substation builds and brownfield rebuilds/extensions
Understanding of utility engineering handoff processes to external design/construction partners
Field exposure and ability to support substation scoping and follow-up visits
