Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention Tribal Coordinator (DOH/CHP #58345)

The New Mexico Department of Health is dedicated to reducing excessive alcohol use and its adverse outcomes in the state. The Tribal Coordinator will design, implement, and support alcohol prevention policies and programs for Tribes, Pueblos, and Nations throughout New Mexico, addressing health disparities in alcohol-related deaths among American Indian populations.

Responsibilities

Convene, manage, and support operations of the Tribal Alcohol Related Mortality (T.A.R.M) Workgroup
Assess, plan, and evaluate existing Tribal alcohol prevention, intervention, and treatment programs and gaps
Develop and disseminate culturally tailored materials for reducing alcohol mortality and related harms in Tribes, Pueblos, and Nations
Represent The Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention at public events
Coordinate with other OAMP staff and provide assistance ensuring that overall OAMP strategies are responsive to the needs of and respectful of Tribes, Pueblos, and Nations along with their citizens
Work with the Office of Tribal Liaison as needed to respond to requests, contribute to reports, and support alcohol-related work and activities

Required

Associate's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Family Studies/Services, Social Sciences, or Human Services and one (1) year of experience as a social work assistant and/or in social or community coordination, working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work/case management experience, and/or behavioral health care
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment

Preferred

Experience working in the area of substance misuse prevention
A bachelor's or graduate degree in a field related to responsibilities of the position
Designing, implementing, and evaluating culturally grounded alcohol prevention programs for Native youth and families, integrating Indigenous traditions with evidence-based public health strategies
Working with Native communities and knowledge of Tribal health systems
Conducting Tribal outreach at health fairs, events, and community centers
Community coalition and/or workgroup facilitation and substance misuse prevention program development
Grant writing and resource development
Organizing meetings
Preparing written reports and communications for a variety of audiences and formats
Collaborating effectively with teams
Collaborating with elders, cultural leaders, and health councils to ensure programming reflects Tribal traditions and values
Developing and delivering alcohol prevention education workshops in schools, clinics, and other community settings
Coordinating culturally inclusive campaigns addressing binge drinking, underage drinking, and alcohol-related harms
Understanding and promoting Tribal sovereignty
Training department staff and Tribal community partners on culturally appropriate prevention strategies
Strengthening community-driven health systems
Supporting initiatives that effectively address Indigenous social drivers of health
Background in behavioral health, social services, and/or public health
Familiarity with evidence-based prevention strategies and Indigenous cultural healing practices
The ability to collect and analyze data to plan and evaluate prevention interventions
Strong communication skills and Tribal community engagement skills
Ability to serve as a liaison between the Department of Health, Tribal health clinics, behavioral health departments, community health programs, and external partners
