Power Systems Research Engineer

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Power Systems Research Engineer to work in their Power and Energy Systems Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology Directorate. The role involves participating in ideation, planning, coordination, and implementation of power systems projects, with a focus on modeling, simulation, and testing of power systems.

Responsibilities

Select, apply, and integrate engineering principles, theories, concepts, and technologies with complex engineered systems
Independently or in collaboration with others, design, plan, coordinate, implement, and disseminate projects in the form of technical reports, publications, and presentations at national technical meetings and project reviews with program sponsors
Determine or approve the technical approach for the development and testing of engineered solutions using existing or newly created technologies
Produce proposals and perform business development for new work including joint projects with industry. Develop analytical models of electrical, mechanical or thermal systems to support and verify design
Collaborate and partner with other government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project goals
Enhance technical skills and other capabilities to support the INL mission. Stay up to date with developments in industry and maintain skills and contribute to the development of new concepts
Develop design documentation, maintenance and configuration of power systems, and research and development of advanced power control or measurement techniques
Apply engineering principles to the development of operational power systems and may include the development of software and hardware
Research and development activities, developing power system dynamic and transient modeling and simulations, including machine learning applications
Test and validate developed power system theories and algorithms using digital real-time simulation environments including hardware-in-the-loop
Mentor junior staff and look for opportunities to involve them in current projects

Required

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution and 5 years of relevant experience or Master's degree/PhD in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and 2 years of related experience
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution and 9 years of relevant experience or Master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and 6 years of related experience or a PhD in engineering and 4 years of related experience
Experience in power systems dynamic and transient modeling and simulation, power systems machine learning applications, protection, and stability analysis

Preferred

Experience with power system testing using digital real-time simulation environments and using power and/or controller hardware-in-the-loop
Electric grid operations experience, human factors for control rooms and/or high-, medium- and low-voltage direct current experience
