Manufacturing (Design) Engineer - Automotive Product Development

Responsibilities

Own products through their entire lifecycle, from initial design concept through production ramp-up, manufacturing, and implementation
Rapidly prototype new components and assemblies to validate designs and manufacturing approaches
Design parts, tooling, fixtures, and templates that are optimized for manufacturability, quality, and cost
Source materials, components, and manufacturing services from qualified suppliers
Implement new products into production, including process development, equipment qualification, and operator training
Apply first principles engineering thinking to solve complex manufacturing challenges
Analyze and optimize manufacturing processes for efficiency, quality, and safety
Develop innovative solutions for tooling, fixturing, and assembly methods
Create and maintain technical documentation including specifications, work instructions, and engineering drawings
Utilize basic hand tools, additive solutions, and design tools to build prototypes, troubleshoot issues, and validate processes
Understand equipment operation, maintenance requirements, and manufacturing capabilities
Work directly on the production floor to implement changes and support manufacturing operations
Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for quality or production issues
Partner closely with Quality Engineering to establish inspection criteria, resolve non-conformances, and drive continuous improvement
Work with Operations teams to optimize production flow, reduce downtime, and improve throughput
Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences

Required

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment used in automotive production
Demonstrated ability to apply engineering fundamentals and first principles thinking to solve problems
Proficiency with basic hand tools and mechanical aptitude for understanding how things are made
Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and iterative design processes
Knowledge of tooling design, fixture development, and template creation
Ability to read and create engineering drawings and technical specifications
Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities

Preferred

Experience in automotive manufacturing or related production environment
Competent with CAD software, SolidWorks preferred
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
Understanding of quality systems (ISO/TS 16949, APQP, PPAP)
Experience with supplier development and qualification
Hands-on experience with machining, welding, or fabrication processes is added value
