Packaging Engineer
Amphenol Fiber Systems International (AFSI) is a full service fiber optic company specializing in the fabrication and manufacture of fiber optic connectivity products and systems. The Packaging Engineer will design, develop, validate and optimize packaging solutions that ensure product protection and cost-efficiency while collaborating with various teams to support product launches and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
Design and specify protective packaging for new and existing products (boxes, trays, inserts, cushioning, pallets, films, labels)
Develop packaging concepts that meet protection, cost, sustainability and manufacturability targets
Create packaging drawings and specifications using CAD and produce bill-of-materials and artwork guidance
Support development of product and shipping package labeling
Perform and/or coordinate packaging tests: drop, vibration, compression, atmospheric, and transport simulation (ISTA, ASTM, ISTA 1A/3A/6, ASTM D4169 etc.)
Lead packaging validation and qualification activities for new product introductions and for design changes
Manage internal packaging trials and work with external test labs and packaging suppliers to validate designs
Implement packaging cost-reduction and material-reduction initiatives, including returnable/reusable packaging and pallet optimization
Ensure packaging complies with applicable regulations and customer requirements (packaging waste regulations, hazardous material labeling, country-specific marking)
Support supplier selection, audits and supplier packaging specifications; review supplier-initiated packaging changes
Monitor packaging KPIs (damage rates, cost per unit, cube utilization, on-time delivery of packaging components) and provide actionable reporting
Maintain packaging data in PLM/ERP and ensure packaging documents are controlled
Troubleshoot packaging-related field failures and implement CAPA in partnership with Quality
Support sustainability initiatives: material recyclability, reduced packaging weight/volume, and packaging take-back where applicable
Provide training and guidance to production and warehouse teams on proper pack out and palletization methods
Qualification
Required
Practical experience with packaging testing standards and test protocols (drop, vibration, compression)
Proficiency with CAD for packaging and part/fixture design (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Artios CAD or similar)
Strong understanding of manufacturing and supply chain interfaces (palletization, kitting, vendor pack)
Ability to work cross functionally
Good communication skills and experience working with cross function teams and external suppliers
Familiarity with packaging sustainability initiatives and recyclable/bioplastic materials
Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
3+ years packaging engineering experience for electronic components, cable assemblies, or mechanical products
U.S. Citizen or permanent resident to satisfy AFSI ITAR requirements
