Responsibilities

Support the mission of Mott Community College through effective coordination of communications methods and implementation of public relations strategies
Coordinate media relations efforts, working in partnership with the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications
Translate the College’s strategic plans into increased visibility by developing and executing a comprehensive media relations effort
Enhance the College’s image by cultivating relationships with local, regional and national media, partnerships within the community, and other higher educational institutions
Work closely with various academic divisions and departments to ensure that the media relations program supports the College’s overall mission
Serve as the College’s primary public relations writer and liaison between Mott Community College and various communications media
Publicize, promote and provide information about the College, overseeing production of a broad range of College publications and external communications
Gather, research and prepare information for press releases or articles for distribution to the media, as well as college communications and publications
Conduct interviews or meet with faculty, staff or students; make contact and interact with media who print or broadcast stories generated by the Communications Specialist
Establish and maintain a library of pertinent resources and reference materials for the development of articles for newspapers, television and radio outlets

Required

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field
Three years' experience in a public relations and/or journalistic environment
Excellent research, interviewing, writing, editing and proofreading skills, including knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style guidelines
Experience in developing social media strategies and managing a successful social media initiative
Consummate communication skills, with working knowledge of journalism, media relations and general public information techniques and practices
Ability to organize resources and establish priorities when gathering information and communicating key messages to the media and to various internal and external audiences is necessary

Preferred

Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to work as a member of a cross-functional team, demonstrating a capacity to work effectively with colleagues at all levels of the College
Keen time management and organizational skills; must be self-motivated with an ability to develop and follow through on projects while handling multiple assignments with timelines
Excellent problem-solving skills, demonstrating ability to make good judgment calls and sound decisions
Awareness of the importance for maintaining confidentiality and exercising sensitivity in matters and situations that warrant heightened discretion
