Research Technician

Responsibilities
Assist in the management and processing of biological samples from patients entering one of the UNC Kidney Center’s study cohorts
Work in a collaborative network composed of physicians, PhDs, nurses, research personnel, and patients
Perform hands-on processing of biological samples (including blood and urine)
Process samples including cell isolation, preparation and extraction for gel electrophoresis, ELISA, Western blotting, flow cytometry, and other cellular, molecular, and biochemical methods
Assist in inventorying and maintaining all equipment needed for preparing, organizing, and storing reagents for sample processing
Keep current all requirements for laboratory safety in handling blood borne pathogens
Qualification
Required
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work
Ability to multi-task
Ability to work under pressure while meeting deadlines
Ability to learn new techniques
Flexibility in work hours to accommodate process of patient samples that may arrive after 5 pm (particularly on Tuesday clinic days)
Ability to travel from the laboratory in Burnett-Womack to the outreach area of McLendon Labs in the UNC hospital several times a day to transport samples
All requirements for laboratory safety in handling blood borne pathogens must be kept current
