Design Engineer (In-Building Networks), Network Operations

The Design Engineer will produce clear, accurate, and build-ready network designs for multi-dwelling unit communities, integrating fiber backhaul, wireless inter-building connectivity, and in-building distribution.

Responsibilities

Perform site surveys and field verification to assess existing infrastructure and constraints in residential buildings and campuses
Create in-building designs for pathways, risers, telecom closets, equipment layouts, and wireless coverage zones
Design and integrate fiber, structured cabling, and wireless systems into a single cohesive network architecture
Produce construction-ready drawings, schematics, and bills of material (BOMs) suitable for permitting and contractor execution
Apply RF-aware design principles where applicable (antenna placement, coverage intent, interference considerations, backhaul selection)
Ensure designs comply with NEC, NESC, and applicable local low-voltage and building codes
Review engineering drawings, specifications, and as-built documentation for accuracy and constructability
Translate site walk findings into clear, contractor-ready and property-manager-friendly design packages
Define and follow design standards and best practices, including: Conduit vs. surface raceway selection, Riser and pathway strategies, Penetration and fire-stopping methods, Equipment mounting, antenna placement, and aesthetic considerations
Collaborate with project managers, deployment, logistics, and contractors to ensure timely and cost-effective implementation
Provide technical guidance during installation, addressing design-related issues in the field
Recommend and implement best practices for fiber, wireless backhaul, and structured cabling deployments

Required

3+ years of experience in telecom, ISP, OSP, in-building wireless, DAS, or structured cabling design
Demonstrated ability to produce construction-ready design packages for field deployment and permitting
Strong understanding of one or more of the following: Fiber optic networks and OSP/ISP architecture, In-building structured cabling systems, Wireless in-building systems (DAS, WiFi, small cells, RF distribution)
Familiarity with wireless backhaul technologies (PtP, PtMP, microwave, mmWave) or willingness to learn
Proficiency with design tools such as AutoCAD, SmartDraw, Visio, and/or GIS platforms
Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, and local low-voltage or building codes
Ability to clearly communicate designs to technical teams, contractors, and non-technical stakeholders
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment
