ENVIRONMENTAL INTERN

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is seeking Environmental students for an internship opportunity within their Waste Programs Division. Interns will gain experience in environmental science, project management, and GIS while contributing to the agency's mission of protecting public health and the environment.

Responsibilities

The intern will gain experience leading a project and bring the following to the internship:• Environmental Science Foundation: A strong background and understanding of environmental science principles
GIS Proficiency: A basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge
Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively engage with the Unit Manager, colleagues, and external stakeholders
Project Management: Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, meet deadlines, and provide attention to detail for data accuracy and completeness
Collaboration and Interpersonal Skills: The ability to work collaboratively with other interns, staff, and stakeholders in a diverse and inclusive environment, utilizing strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction
Computer Skills: Proficiency in computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management
The intern project will consist of developing a SMAP and assisting with a reassessment of the FUDS Program. The project duties of the SMAP will include:
Collaborating with leadership to develop the SMAP (workplan) skeleton
Conducting desktop and historical document research to identify data gaps (risk plus factors)
Reviewing and summarizing historical technical records for inclusion in the SMAP
Assisting the GIS team with SMAP content design and the development of a Story Map or similar product
Potential for drone and imaging/resolution assistance with the GIS team (optional)

Required

Environmental Science Foundation: A strong background and understanding of environmental science principles

Computer Skills: Proficiency in computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management
Intern candidate must be in their Junior or Senior year of a BS/BA or working towards a Masters/PhD program
Candidate must have a GPA of 3.0 or better
Candidate must have the right to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship
Candidate must be at least 18 years old

Preferred

Selective preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in geology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or environmental policy
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Drone data processing
Potential for drone and imaging/resolution assistance with the GIS team
