University Relations Manager - Protection and Automation

Responsibilities

Support and grow strategic university partnerships and lab development initiatives at key institutions with strong power and energy programs, such as NC State University (NCSU), Arizona State University (ASU), Texas A&M University (TAMU), Clemson University, College of Charleston, and the University of Idaho, with target universities evolving over time based on business and talent needs
Maintain and expand partnerships with technical and community colleges, including Wake Technical Community College, to support technician-focused pipelines, hands-on training, and workforce development initiatives aligned with the Protection & Automation Technician Development Program (PA TDP)
Design and co‑develop course structures for undergraduate and graduate engineering curricula
Develop hands‑on laboratory experiments aligned with real‑world applications in power systems, automation, and protection
Define, curate, and mentor technical student project topics (capstone, research, senior design)
Collaborate with university faculty to align learning outcomes with industry needs
Serve as Siemens’ primary academic relations contact to foster long-term partnerships
Coordinate deliverables, timelines, and collaboration milestones
Translate Siemens technical requirements into academic-ready material
Review and provide feedback on lab manuals, course content, and project deliverables
Deliver guest lectures and technical presentations as part of academic programs
Participate in university career fairs and student engagement events by technically communicating Siemens solutions, laboratory environments, and academic use cases aligned with Protection & Automation programs
Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple teams within Protection & Automation, including Customer Solutions & Innovation (CSI), Customer Technical Partners, and Solutions Engineering, to align academic initiatives with business and technology strategies

Required

Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field
2+ years experience in projects with multi-stakeholders reporting or academic initiatives
Ability to understand engineering fundamentals including AC/DC schematics and system architecture drawings
Familiarity with academic program structures, ABET-style outcomes, and engineering assessment methods
Ability and willingness to travel up to 30% domestically
Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without company sponsorship

Preferred

Experience collaborating with universities, faculty, or research groups
Experience creating engineering curricula, labs, or project‑based courses
Understanding of substation automation fundamentals, protection concepts, or IEC‑61850 communication principles
Awareness of power system protection elements (overcurrent, differential, voltage protection) sufficient for academic collaboration
Familiarity with communication protocols (IEC‑61850, DNP3, Modbus, Profibus, OPC)
Basic understanding of RTUs/PLCs, automation system architecture, and engineering workflow documentation
Strong relationship‑building ability with professors, department heads, and student organizations
Ability to support workforce development pipelines and STEM strategic initiatives
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong time‑management and project‑management capabilities
Ability to present technical concepts to non‑technical academic audiences
