Controller
Wilmington Eye is an ophthalmology practice seeking a Controller to serve as the senior financial officer responsible for all accounting operations and financial management. This role provides strategic financial leadership and ensures the integrity of financial information for business decisions and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
Direct the monthly close process ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely completion
Maintain and optimize the general ledger structure and chart of accounts across all entities
Prepare comprehensive monthly financial statements for practice, ASC, optical, and infusion center operations
Develop and report key performance indicators (KPIs) tailored to ophthalmology practice metrics
Present financial results to physician partners and leadership with clear analysis and recommendations
Lead the annual budget development process across all service lines and locations
Conduct monthly budget vs. actual variance analysis with actionable insights
Prepare rolling cash flow forecasts and manage cash position optimization
Model financial scenarios for strategic decision-making
Provide financial oversight of accounts receivable performance and aging trends
Monitor charge lag, claim submission processes, and revenue recognition accuracy
Establish RCM financial governance including denial trends, collection rates, and payer performance
Partner with billing team to optimize revenue capture and reduce AR days
Analyze payer mix, reimbursement rates, and contribution margin by service line
Design, implement, and monitor internal controls and segregation of duties
Ensure compliance with healthcare financial regulations and tax requirements
Oversee payroll processing and benefits administration financial aspects
Manage external audit process and relationships with CPA firms
Oversee day-to-day financial operations across all practice locations
Provide financial analysis and recommendations for capital planning and equipment acquisition decisions
Support strategic initiatives including growth, expansion, and new service line evaluation
Conduct financial due diligence for practice expansion or partnership opportunities
Analyze physician productivity, compensation models, and practice profitability
Supervise accounting staff and foster professional development
Manage fixed asset tracking, depreciation schedules, and capitalization policies
Coordinate with vendors, banks, and other financial service providers
Support partnership matters including buy-in/buy-out calculations and allocations
Maintain appropriate insurance coverages and risk management financial aspects
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred
Minimum 3-5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience in healthcare private practice (non-hospital setting)
Demonstrated expertise in revenue cycle oversight in a medical practice environment
Preferred
Ophthalmology or specialty practice experience strongly preferred
Proficiency in QuickBooks
Experience with practice management/EHR systems
Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial analysis capabilities
Strong knowledge of GAAP, healthcare regulatory requirements, and internal controls
