Traffic Signal Technician Trainee- Public Works

Responsibilities
Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives; maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations
Assists with the installation, troubleshooting and repairing of traffic signals and streetlights including poles, vehicles detectors, controllers, bulbs, ballasts, monitors, cables and other related equipment
Assists with the performance of field maintenance and repairs utilizing tools and techniques of the trade, including the use of a bucket truck and/or other means of access
Assist in performing preventative maintenance including, but not limited to cleaning optical systems, replacing loop detectors, and adjusting cables and/or fixtures
Assists with the maintenance of parts and equipment inventory. Helps maintain records of all equipment and facilities maintenance and repair records
May perform after-hours emergency stand-by on a rotational basis, as required
Assists with identifying system problems, solves electronic failures, and provides remedies to restore system proficiency
Assist with the observation, inspection and coordination with the signal and lighting installation associated with the City’s capital roadway and intersection improvement program
May be required to work hours other than standard day shift
Works during emergency situations as required. Regular and punctual attendance

Qualification
Required
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma required
One (1) year of relevant experience and/or advanced technical coursework in a related field is required
Possession of valid driver's license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days from date of hire
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Traffic Signal Certification required or the ability to be obtained within twelve (12) months from date of hire
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification required to or the ability to be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire
Knowledge of methods, practices, techniques and materials of the traffic signal, street lighting, electrical or electronics trade
Ability to read, understand and work from plans, sketches, and schematics
Broad knowledge of computer operations and programming practices
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to troubleshoot and locate defective devices and make proper repairs
Ability to schedule maintenance, repairs and inspection of traffic signals and streetlights
Ability to locate underground utilities with electronic locators
Ability to focus on the positive in every situation
Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization
Ability to stay centered when challenged
Ability to read and understand City maps
Ability to access, input, and retrieve data from a computer
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally
Ability to establish and maintain the trust and confidence of the department and public
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Ability to follow through with assigned tasks
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public

Personal Days: 2 days for non-exempt employees per year 3 days for exempt employees per year
Sick Time: FT employees accrue 8 hours per month PT employees accrue 4 hours per month
Retirement Plan: The City contributes an amount equal to 11.4% of an eligible employee's biweekly earnings into a 401(a) Defined Contribution Plan. Employee contributes 1%.
