Chief Human Resources Officer
Sovereign Bank is seeking a Chief Human Resources Officer who will serve as a key strategic advisor to the executive team and Board. This role is responsible for shaping and leading the bank’s people strategy, overseeing talent acquisition, workforce planning, and employee engagement to align with business goals.
Responsibilities
Serve as a trusted member of the executive leadership team, aligning the bank’s human capital strategy with long-term business objectives
Lead organization-wide workforce planning, succession planning, and talent development initiatives
Drive cultural clarity, employee engagement, organizational health, and change-readiness across all bank locations
Advise senior leadership on organizational design, staffing models, and the people implications of growth strategies, branch expansion, and new market entry
Provide executive oversight for all HR functions, including talent acquisition, performance management, training, employee relations, total rewards (compensation, incentive, and benefit design), payroll, and HR technology
Lead, mentor, and develop HR staff to ensure high performance, service excellence, professional development, and alignment with organizational priorities
Establish and maintain modern, scalable HR policies and practices that support a diverse and growth-oriented banking environment
Oversee end-to-end talent lifecycle including recruitment, onboarding, engagement, performance management, recognition, retention, and employer brand positioning
Build proactive recruiting practices to attract high-performing employees and leaders, ensuring the bank maintains a strong talent pipeline across all markets
Utilize workforce analytics and market data to anticipate staffing needs and guide strategic hiring decisions
Champion an employee experience strategy grounded in the bank’s mission and values
Lead initiatives that improve morale, recognition, and employee engagement
Create and support leadership development programs, management training, coaching frameworks, and pathways for internal mobility
Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local employment laws, banking industry requirements, and HR best practices
Mitigate and resolve employee relations matters, and when necessary, oversee investigations and disciplinary processes
Continuously evaluate and update HR policies, risk controls, and governance frameworks to maintain compliance and mitigate operational risk
Oversee strategy, design, and execution of competitive compensation and benefits programs to support talent attraction and retention, including management of and negotiation with key vendors
Partner with finance to build and manage the HR and people operations budget
Ensure compliance with compensation regulations and internal equity principles
Lead the strategy and optimization of HRIS, talent acquisition and management platforms, and other human capital management (HCM) technologies
Evaluate organizational trends, workforce metrics, and predictive analytics to guide executive decisions
Report regularly to leadership and the Board on key workforce and talent metrics and industry trends
Represent the bank in community, professional, and industry organizations as appropriate
Perform additional responsibilities aligned with organizational needs and strategic objectives
Qualification
Required
Executive-level leadership presence and strong decision-making abilities
Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills
Demonstrated success leading HR at a strategic level in a complex, multi-location environment
Expertise in organizational development, change management, and culture-building
Strong business acumen including proven analytical, problem-solving, and project management capabilities
Deep knowledge of HR regulations, compliance requirements, and best practices
Proficiency in HRIS, talent acquisition and management platforms, and other human capital management (HCM) technologies, as well as the Microsoft Office Suite
Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, organizational leadership, or related field required; years of experience in Human Resources will be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree
10+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, with at least 5 years in senior leadership or executive roles
Preferred
Master's degree
SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or similar certification
