Manufacturing Engineer

Steel & O'Brien Manufacturing Inc. is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer – Welding to oversee the design, setup, optimization, and support of welding processes in their manufacturing facility. The role involves developing welding processes, troubleshooting production issues, and leading continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and quality.

Responsibilities

Lead the layout, setup, and commissioning of manual, orbital, and robotic welding stations
Define equipment requirements, technical specifications, and standards for welding systems
Support selection and installation of welding power sources, robots, fixtures, tooling, and safety systems
Coordinate with facilities and operations teams to ensure proper utilities, systems, and safety integration
Develop, document, and optimize welding processes for production
Create and maintain work instructions, standard work, and visual aids for welding operations
Establish welding parameters, joint designs, fixturing strategies, and process controls to ensure repeatability and quality
Support new product introductions (NPI) by developing welding processes and production ready setups
Implement and refine orbital welding processes, including joint preparation, parameter selection, and tooling
Support programming and optimization of robotic welding systems in collaboration with automation partners
Design or specify fixtures and tooling to support precision, repeatability, and automation readiness
Provide hands-on shop floor support for welding operations
Troubleshoot welding defects, equipment issues, and process variability
Collaborate with Quality and Operations teams to resolve weld related production challenges
Analyze welding performance metrics such as cycle time, arc-on time, defect rates, and rework
Lead continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce variation, and lower production costs
Support Lean initiatives such as SMED, 5S, standard work, and mistake-proofing within welding areas
Work closely with operations, quality, and facilities teams to ensure stable, scalable welding operations
Support equipment upgrades, layout changes, and facility expansions

Required

Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
3–7+ years of experience supporting TIG (GTAW) welding in a manufacturing environment
Hands-on experience with manual and/or orbital welding systems
Strong understanding of TIG welding fundamentals including heat input, shielding gas selection, tungsten selection, joint design, and metallurgy
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and process documentation

Preferred

Experience with robotic TIG welding cells
Experience supporting high-precision or code-critical welding applications (stainless steel, aluminum, thin-wall tubing, pressure piping, etc.)
Experience supporting greenfield facility startups or major expansions
Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma experience
