Law Clinic Attorney

Supervises law students
Provides assistance to students at hearings
Advises students through different stages of a case (strategy, research, investigations, drafting, preparing for trial, conducting hearings, etc.)
Reviews, edits, and approves letters, emails, documents and trial notebooks
Supervises and teaches law students while representing clients in a professional manner that upholds and enhances the reputation of the Law Clinic
Takes over cases when students are unavailable, including hearings. Review, provide feedback, edit, and approve all letters, emails, documents, trial notebooks, and other work products produced by students
Advises students in all aspects of cases (strategy, research, investigations, drafting, preparing for trial, conducting hearings, etc.)
Helps students manage client relationships and ensures students properly document work done in physical case files and law practice management systems
Meets with students at least weekly to discuss case status and strategy
Takes over cases when students are unavailable, including hearings. Review, provide feedback, edit, and approve all letters, emails, documents, trial notebooks, and other work products produced by students
Attends court with students and being present at all hearings where students appear
Assists or covers for other supervising attorney’s or Director’s clients or students when needed
Provides organizational and administrative support in Law Clinic operations
Contributes data and information to compile and timely complete grant reports for Law Clinic funders
Collaborates with the law school’s marketing team to promote the Law Clinic to students and general public by updating social media
Attends CLE conferences and events, including statewide conferences for family law, national veterans’ conferences, and poverty law, as funding permits
Attends clinic meetings
Participates in the AALS New Clinicians Conference and other conferences deemed necessary or helpful to execute duties
Provides other administrative support, as needed
Enters time contemporaneously and closes out cases withing 10 days of file closure
Primarily responsible for grant caseload at all times and may work without student assistance when students are not available
Assures compliance with grant provisions and strictly adheres to income guidelines. Submits all cases for approval to Director prior to accepting. Submits all income verification documents to Director for approval prior to proceeding with filing or for case acceptance
Timely completes all mandatory trainings
Collaborates on Grantor requirements for contributions to TexasLawHelp.org
Refers all cases to Director for approval prior to accepting case for representation
Qualification
Required
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
Five years of related experience in legal practice
Licensed by State Bar of Texas for a minimum of 5 years and be a member in good standing
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
Knowledge of legal research systems and best practices uses of AI technology
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
Knowledge of law practice management systems
Ability to supervise law students and assign and review their work
Ability to teach in classroom (if needed to occasionally assist Director) and one-on-one mentoring students
Ability to work independently
