AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC INTERN (NON-CAREER)

The City of Long Beach is seeking an Automotive Mechanic Intern in the Fleet Services Bureau, Maintenance Division. This six-month paid internship offers students the opportunity to acquire practical skills while supporting the division's daily operations and potentially working across various Fleet divisions.

Responsibilities

Supplies motor vehicles with gas, oil, air and water
Performs safety inspections on city vehicle under supervision
Makes minor repairs and adjustments under supervision
Replaces light bulbs and fuses
Examines, charges and replaces batteries
Repairs tires and tubes under supervision
Cleans and washes vehicles
Cleans shop areas and repairs equipment
Assists mechanics and other skilled trades persons on assigned jobs
Observes safety rules and regulations
May open and close shop work orders using computerized Fleet Management system
May assist in lien sales and property disposal procedures
Performs other related duties as required

Required

Current enrollment in an automotive trade school or automotive technology program (Proof Required)
Ability to accept instruction and evaluation
Self-starter, dependable, diligent, amenable to performing elementary tasks to advance project goals
Ability to complete assignments independently, accurately, and on time
Excellent organizational skills and ability to demonstrate attention to detail
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work on teams

Preferred

Bilingual skills (Spanish, Khmer and/or Tagalog) are desirable for positions interacting with the public
