Responsibilities
Serve as the primary technical authority for the engineering team
Own architectural decisions, tradeoffs, and long-term technical direction
Lead design discussions and write clear design docs for significant changes
Guide the evolution of data models, APIs, and system boundaries
Partner with the CTO on high-level architecture and prioritization while operating independently day to day
Be accountable for keeping the system understandable as complexity increases
Design, build, and maintain Elixir/Phoenix services in production
Own complex or high-impact backend work (performance, correctness, scalability)
Improve system reliability, observability, and operational clarity
Raise the bar on code quality through example, not bureaucracy
Set and enforce a strong, pragmatic code review standard
Help engineers reason about tradeoffs, not just implementations
Ensure the system remains understandable as it grows
Reduce technical debt through intentional refactoring, not rewrites
Mentor senior and junior engineers technically
Help engineers level up their architectural and systems thinking
Be a sounding board for design questions before they escalate
Create an environment where strong engineers do their best work
Qualification
Required
7+ years of professional software engineering experience
Strong backend experience with Elixir (or deep experience in another functional or concurrent language with willingness to go deep in Elixir)
Experience designing and operating production systems
Strong judgment around architecture, data modeling, and APIs
Comfort working in and improving existing codebases
Ability to lead technically without needing formal authority
Outstanding communications skills, in person, on calls and in writing with the team, across the organization and with external partners and vendors. You will be explaining things to both technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred
Phoenix experience
PostgreSQL performance and data modeling experience
Exposure to frontend systems (Next.js / React) at the interface level
Experience being the 'go-to' technical person on a small team
Familiarity with RESTful API design
Experience reviewing and guiding other engineers' work
Exposure to startup or small-team environments
Experience working professionally with Agents like Codex or Claude Code
