Responsibilities
Own end-to-end solution design, technical architecture, and impact analysis for complex mainframe systems
Lead and mentor a team of mainframe developers in application design, development, and implementation
Develop, optimize, and review COBOL programs, JCL jobs, DB2 queries, and CICS transactions
Perform performance tuning for batch processing, DB2 access paths, and CICS TPS optimization
Manage code promotion, release planning, and ensure compliance with audit, security, and governance standards
Drive modernization initiatives including API enablement and DevOps pipeline integration
Conduct code reviews and enforce coding standards and best practices
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Business Analysts, QA, Operations, DBA) for seamless system integration
Provide production support leadership, conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for critical incidents, and implement permanent fixes
Prepare technical documentation, runbooks, and contribute to governance frameworks
Stay updated with the latest trends and tools in mainframe technologies
Conduct daily team huddle meetings and shift handover calls
Qualification
Required
7 – 12 Years of experience in Mainframe application development and modernization initiatives using COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, and CICS
Strong technical leadership and hands-on development experience
Ability to own end-to-end solution design, technical architecture, and impact analysis for complex mainframe systems
Experience leading and mentoring a team of mainframe developers in application design, development, and implementation
Proficiency in developing, optimizing, and reviewing COBOL programs, JCL jobs, DB2 queries, and CICS transactions
Experience performing performance tuning for batch processing, DB2 access paths, and CICS TPS optimization
Ability to manage code promotion, release planning, and ensure compliance with audit, security, and governance standards
Experience driving modernization initiatives including API enablement and DevOps pipeline integration
Experience conducting code reviews and enforcing coding standards and best practices
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams (Business Analysts, QA, Operations, DBA) for seamless system integration
Experience providing production support leadership, conducting root cause analysis (RCA) for critical incidents, and implementing permanent fixes
Ability to prepare technical documentation, runbooks, and contribute to governance frameworks
Staying updated with the latest trends and tools in mainframe technologies
Experience conducting daily team huddle meetings and shift handover calls
Advanced programming skills in COBOL, including modular design, exception handling, and performance optimization
Experience with complex job streams, utilities (SORT, IDCAMS), and scheduling dependencies in JCL
Advanced SQL skills in DB2, including stored procedures, triggers, bind/package management, and performance tuning
Experience with dataset design, IDCAMS scripting, and recovery strategies in VSAM
Experience with transaction design, pseudo-conversational programming, BMS maps, and resource definitions in CICS
Familiarity with debugging tools such as Abend-AID, Xpediter, File-AID
Experience with job schedulers like CA7 / Control-M
Strong understanding of SDLC, Agile practices, and change management
Leadership in code reviews, mentoring, and technical governance
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities
Preferred
Certifications in Mainframe technologies or Leadership certifications
