Director of Finance

Friends of the Poor and Catherine McAuley Center is seeking a Director of Finance to lead the organization's financial health and operational stability. This role will oversee finance, accounting, and administrative functions while collaborating closely with the President & CEO and Board of Directors to ensure sound financial stewardship and compliance.

Responsibilities

Serve as the organization's chief financial steward, aligning financial decisions with mission and long-term sustainability
Partner with the President & CEO on financial strategy, multi-year forecasting, capital planning, and cash-flow management
Provide clear, timely financial information and analysis to the Board of Directors and Finance/Audit Committees; prepare board packets and present findings as requested
Develop dashboards and reports that translate complex financial data into actionable insights for leadership
Oversee general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, revenue recognition, bank and investment reconciliations, and month-end close in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting
Maintain and strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and documentation to ensure segregation of duties and audit trails
Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of restricted funds, grant budgets, and program allocations in partnership with Programs and Development
Supervise the Finance Coordinator to ensure high-quality data entry, reconciliations, and documentation
Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the CEO and directors; establish calendar, templates, and targets
Produce monthly budget-to-actual reports and forecasts, brief leadership on variances, risks, and opportunities
Identify cost-efficiency opportunities and process improvements across departments
Lead the annual audit process; coordinate with auditors, prepare schedules and management discussion, and implement recommendations
Ensure completion of Form 990 and all regulatory filings; maintain compliance with federal, state, and local requirements and grant/contract conditions
Maintain the organizational risk portfolio including insurance, incident reporting, business continuity, and policy governance in partnership with the CEO
Oversee accounting software and financial systems; champion integrations with CRM, HRIS, and program databases to improve accuracy and efficiency
Develop and maintain financial policies, standard operating procedures, and training resources, safeguard financial data and confidentiality
Lead the administration function to ensure effective internal operations, workflow efficiency, and cross-department coordination
Supervise the Administrative Coordinator to deliver high-quality office services including vendor coordination, purchasing, office systems, technology support triage, and records management
Oversee the Facilities & Grounds function through the Administrative Coordinator, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost-effective facilities; align preventive maintenance and capital needs with budget strategy
Maintain organization-wide administrative policies, procedures, and knowledge resources
Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing Finance & Administration team grounded in integrity, service, and continuous improvement
Provide coaching, goal-setting, and performance evaluations for direct reports; ensure clear roles and effective coordination with Facilities & Grounds
Partner with the Director of Programs & Services on grant/contract budgets, allowable costs, and program reporting needs
Collaborate with the Director of Development & Communications on proposal budgets, grant financial reporting, and restricted gift stewardship

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; CPA or advanced degree preferred
5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience in nonprofit or mission-driven settings; leadership experience strongly preferred
Proficiency with GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, audits, and regulatory filings
Strong systems aptitude including accounting software, Excel, and data integrations
Demonstrated success in budgeting, financial analysis, cash-flow management, and internal controls
Excellent communication skills with ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences
Proven ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and drive process improvements
Strong commitment to the organization's mission and values

Preferred

CPA or advanced degree preferred
Leadership experience strongly preferred
