Mechanical Engineer I-II
Muscatine Power and Water is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I-II to provide engineering and mechanical design expertise to their generation site. The role involves evaluating unit performance, managing plant improvement projects, and assisting in the design and maintenance of engineered systems.

Responsibilities
Gather, evaluate, and report unit performance data to regulatory agencies (such as EIA, NERC, MISO) and management. Based on the evaluation of data
Assist in conducting performance tests on the units or specific equipment (Real Power Capability, Reactive Power Capability, Pulverizer Clean Air Flow Capacity, Incremental Heat Rate, etc.)
Assist in establishing plant heat rates and capabilities based upon performance testing
Assist in developing ASME heat rate testing of new plant equipment
Assist in establishing and administering plant diagnostic routines
Manage and assist in all phases of plant improvement projects, including:
Investigate operation and maintenance problems, recommending and assisting in the solutions as needed
Design mechanical and electrical changes for plant improvements
Design and develop drawings for mechanical equipment installation from concept to completion
Work with outside contractors on projects, providing construction inspection services as needed
Maintain as-built drawings in the Utility's document management system as required per field modifications
Manage and assist in inspection and maintenance of engineered plant systems
Administer inspections of, evaluate reported condition of, and recommend repairs for pipe hanger support systems
Administer ultrasonic thickness testing of boiler tube components and critical piping and recommend repairs
Administer or recommend outside services to perform diagnostic testing of plant equipment
Assist Plant Engineers on various projects
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering required, power option preferred
Mechanical Engineer I is an entry-level engineering position; Mechanical Engineer II is a minimum of 3 years power plant or related experience preferred
Design experience dealing with pipe sizing, flow calculations, and layout
Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes and standards that govern work at power generation facilities, such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, National Board Codes, OSHA, NFPA, NEC, AWS, Performance Test Code
Knowledge of NERC, MISO, FERC, and EPA standards, regulations, and rules beneficial
Working knowledge of equipment specifications, thermodynamics, fluid flow, and heat transfer
Working knowledge of CAD
Working knowledge of, and the ability to stay current in, programming languages such as VBA
Knowledge, or ability to quickly obtain knowledge, of the MPW generation facilities, including plant equipment, site utilities, piping, electrical, and control systems
Knowledge of electrical methods and design
Knowledge of and the ability to recommend software and applications to increase the efficiency of the department
Knowledge of performance software is beneficial
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere
Project management skills
Good judgment and reasoning skills
Problem identification, analysis, and solving
Proficiency with use of Microsoft Office Word at an intermediate level and Excel at an advanced level
Proficient in the use of databases for SCADA and distributive control systems beneficial
Ability to work as part of a team, either as team leader or a member of a team
Ability to drive results and ensure work is accomplished properly, safely, and in a timely manner
Ability to work independently, effectively prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust work priorities as needed to meet department/organizational objectives
Must be able to attend work on a regular basis and work extended hours as needed
Must be able to comply with the Respiratory Protection Program
Preferred
Mechanical Engineer II is a minimum of 3 years power plant or related experience preferred
Knowledge of NERC, MISO, FERC, and EPA standards, regulations, and rules beneficial
Knowledge of performance software is beneficial
Proficient in the use of databases for SCADA and distributive control systems beneficial
