Research Interviewer

Responsibilities
Conduct interviews covering a wide range of health and behavioral related topics while maintaining privacy and confidentiality
Expertly navigate sensitive conversations with participants, collecting data while adhering to human research subjects’ protections and confidentiality policies
Ensure a thorough and smooth process for all aspects of participant contact, including phone calls, voice messages, and emails
Serve as the primary form of direct contact between participants and the CARA Core
Support special projects as needed, such as in-person data collection events and data entry tasks
Qualification
Required

Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent of education and experience required
Candidate should be reliable, responsible and proactive
Ability to work in a professional, academic environment, follow protocols and closely and adhere to confidentiality and privacy practices as well as ethical research standards
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google (gmail/calendar), and video platforms like Zoom, multi-line phone systems
Prior experience with customer-based support, including excellent phone etiquette and client support skills
Ability to discuss sensitive topics including but not limited to depression, trauma, mental health, substance use, etc., while ensuring privacy, confidentiality, and ethical conduct
Manage emotionally distressing conversations with empathy and non-judgmental responses while maintaining objectivity and professionalism
Effective Communicator - Consistently communicates with clarity and thoroughness to optimize participant understanding
Ability to communicate information in a clear, concise, and timely manner, whether verbally on the phone or via email
Attention to detail-engages with the task at hand to avoid errors. Prepares and carefully reviews data to identify any errors or problems; ensures consistency and that information is clear and easy to understand. Gives attention to and shows care for all aspects of the job no matter how small
Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple projects at once
Composure-ability to stay calm and even-tempered when handling difficult or unexpected changes or developments. Remains calm under pressure and does not become defensive or upset if faced with resistance from participants. Able to recover quickly from challenging experiences and knows when to seek additional assistance when needed
If telecommuting, must adhere to telecommuting agreements which includes maintaining a secure, private dedicated workspace with reliable high-speed internet, that provides space for locking away confidential materials as well as other controls to prevent breaches of confidentiality
Preferred
Prior experience in social sciences, health and behavioral research and/or clinical interviewing skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a team
Ability to collaborate with other interviewers, supervisor and/or other CARA Core staff to share ideas, problem solve and provide organizational support as needed
Responsive to others' ideas or feedback
Able to take constructive and corrective feedback in an open and receptive manner
The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Ability to work flexible hours, average 15-20 hrs/week, up to potentially 29 hrs/week
Potential to add to physical requirements: Able to use hands and fingers to operate equipment such as a computer and phone
