Chief Safety & Security Officer
The NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities is seeking a Chief Safety & Security Officer to lead a Safety & Security Department responsible for the safety operations of various campus settings. This role involves supervising staff, coordinating inspections and training, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations across a 14-county region.

Responsibilities
Supervise a Safety & Security Department of over 40 Safety & Security Officer I’s, 10 Safety & Security Officer II’s and 1 Office Assistant 2
Schedule department staff to ensure 24-hour coverage of buildings as required
Oversee time and attendance records, overtime, etc
Direct staff and make work assignments; review for completion
Complete annual evaluations of staff, counsels and works with individuals on performance
Coordinate departmental training
Responsible for coordinating and directing an inspection and testing program throughout a 14 county region. This entails fire safety, building code inspections, annual inspections of approximately 135 community residences and programs
Must be knowledgeable in the Life Safety Code (LSC) and NYS Building and Fire Codes. Inspects and interprets for subordinate staff. Reviews and approves all inspection reports and issued citations
Directs safety department in conducting fire drills for all campus-based programs. Maintain records, and recommends corrective actions
Coordinates with local county fire control and disaster preparedness center for mutual aid
Coordinates new employee and annual refresher trainings for all employees and family care providers in fire safety
Responsible for interpreting and directing staff actions as peace officers in enforcement of criminal procedure law, penal law, vehicle and traffic laws during the course of normal duties
Oversees the completion of motor vehicle accident reports, their investigation and corrective action
Coordinates with personnel regarding employee photos and with treatment services for individual ids
Completes department monthly reports, and audits logs
Responsible for the department budget, i.e.… purchasing of materials and equipment
Responds to questions / concerns / complaints from visitors, relatives, individuals and / or staff
Responsible for interviewing and hiring personnel and enforcing DDSO policies and procedures
Participates or chairs several regional committees relative to safety services
Other tasks, as assigned
Qualification
Required
Safety & Security Officers have peace officer status as authorized under Criminal Procedure Law Section 2.10 and Sections 7.25 and 13.25 of Mental Hygiene Law or Section 455 of Public Health Law
Must meet the requirements for appointment to public office defined in Public Officers Law Section 3 (1) and for continued employment as required in Section 30
One year of service as a Safety & Security Officer 2 and reachable for appointment on the current Civil Service Eligible List for this title
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive, non-competitive or 55-b/c status in the posted title and be eligible for lateral transfer; OR be eligible to transfer via Section 70.1, 70.4, or 52.6 of Civil Service Law
The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades
